upgrade to business
A friend and I are traveling from LAX-HKG-BKK. I used business class award tickets (AA) all the way us but could only get one business class seat on the HKG-BKK segment (I was still charged for business class miles). The flight is not until Nov 2010 so there is a possibility of still getting this one segment upgraded (at least to what I paid for). Might we qualify for any preference at the gate when checking in for the upgrade at that time since we actually used miles for business but only got economy?

You won't get any preference at the gate, and it sounds like CX already ripped you off by using your miles.
Sorry, you got ripped.

The award is between you and AA. Each CX partner charges its own members differently on award tickets. As far as CX is concerned, it is a Y ticket and CX gets "paid" as such. Keep checking with AA.
If you still cannot get that cleared in time, there is no harm asking at check in or at the transfer desk/gate in HKG. It is a short flight anyway.
