Help me decide

I apologize for the vague title; I wasn't quite sure what to name it.

Anyways, I booked a ticket for CX in J class, however I am located in Oregon and the flight departs from SFO. I booked a separate itinerary on AS. According to the CSR AS has a baggage agreement with CX; my dilemma is that if I check it in at PDX I might not be able to get the priority baggage tags. Should I pick up my bags in SFO and recheck them in at the CX counter? Or would you recommend checking them all the way?

Check them all the way. Picking up at SFO, then hiking back to the intl terminal check-in desks, then re-checking them, all in the name of a CX J tag on your bag is a little crazy. Bags pop out quick at HKIA anyway, and (presumably you're not a HK ID cardholder) if the visitor line is a little busy or you deplane at a far gate your bags might be out before you even get there.

When you check-in for your CX flight at SFO, be sure to show them the baggage tag receipt from AS so that they can enter it into their system.

They might even radio the baggage room to let them know that there is an incoming bag from AS.

CX is usually pretty good at adding PRIORITY tags to connecting baggage.

In my past experience, CX almost always add the priority tag for me when connecting from another carrier.

Same for me, except for one time. And that one time was flying on AS PDX-SFO and connecting on CX to HKG.

CX will add the priority tag for you. However, you're going to TPE, there's likely going to be only 100+ fliers with you at most and the bags should come out quick for all, even in TPE. Check out the bags to recheck-in just for priority tags, come on....

Haha, the other way to see that is, without a priority tag, OP's luggage may be the 100+th to come out.

The other option is, when you transit in HKG, tell the staff to ensure that your luggage is properly tagged (if not done at YYZ already). By the time you get to BOM, your luggage will be among the first to come out. That may save you the trouble of re-checking in at YYZ. I have more faith in HKG because it is CX's home.
