JFK major delay today

Heard from a ground engineer in Vancouver that the 777-300ER (Asia World City), went AOG at Vancouver last night... apparently the plane took off and shortly after take-off, one of the bearing seal in one of the engine broke and leaking oil fumes into the cabin via the air conditioning... so the aircraft return to Vancouver... and the aircraft did not depart until 15:40 today from YVR - JFK... hence JFK - HKG is delay...

That's how it is scheduled. CX840 turns around as CX889, CX888 turns around as CX841. If you look at the schedule, CX840 would have to sit at JFK overnight in order to fly back as CX841 while CX888 would have to sit at JFK all day in order to fly back as CX889.It is not unique. For example, some NRT flights are like this. HKG-TPE-NRT-HKG (CX450/CX505) and HKG-NRT-TPE-HKG (CX504/CX451). A delay of CX450 TPE-NRT will cause a delay of CX505 NRT-HKG.

Maybe this was caused by the low fly-by? 
Based on my experience 2x with B-KPF, first time I took it, it sounded really wierd when landing. I was able to hear all those squeeking sounds from the landing gear and from the cabin. Now, I Know all planes have these squeeking sounds during landing, but that time was just unusual.

My experience on recently delayed CX888
Ok, it's a few days and just wanted to quickly follow up on my own experience on this long delayed CX888.
We flew from HK to YVR no problem, then on going from YVR as soon as we took off I smell burnt and apparently the FA staff too because they are going up and down trying to find the cause of it. 10 minutes later the Captain announces that for the safety for the craft they are returning to YVR for checking.
As soon as we arrived on YVR we were told to stay onboard and the ground personnel will come and check. They went up and down and took apart a couple of seats to try to locate it but couldn't, so we were ordered off the plane. To make long story short after 7 hours in waiting area we were finally told that they would put us into a hotel and the plane won't be leaving till the next day at 3 p.m. local time. Of course as soon as this is announced chaos broke loose, many people started to yell and scream at ground staff, etc. I just too my hotel sticker and left.
I was surprise that there were no meal vouchers given, and the hotel says they were not told by CX to give meal vouchers. Calling CX gives no help but that "keep the receipts and they may reimburse you", that doesn't sound right to me. So I called the Hotel Customer Service Manager instead, and she is very polite to inform me that she will call CX for me to ask what's the policy. An hour later she called and say CX agreed to pay $20 per passenger on breakfast and lunch voucher.
Got on board and took off no problem.
For the sake of free miles I sent in a complaint to MPO anyway, a polite one.

Just wondering, if the smell didn't get into the aircraft and nobody notices it what would of happened? Engine fire? Plane explosion? Sounds scary.
Oh, one more thing, the ground mechanic originally say it's just "burn plastic" and there's nothing to worry about (he talked to the FA crew and the pilot), but it was the pilot that insists a more thorought check and claim that the airplane was shaking abnormally during take-off.

Just wondering, if the smell didn't get into the aircraft and nobody notices it what would of happened? Engine fire? Plane explosion? Sounds scary.

The instruments are there to warn the pilot of minor problems long before they deterioate into something that could threaten the aircraft. It's indeed rare for smell alone to require anything more than a scan of other instruments, unless of course it prompts serious complaints.
