SXM, like much of the island, was destroyed by Hurricane Irma in 2017 - just a few years after the new terminal opened. Rebuilding was initially delayed while they sorted through insurance, but was making progress until a major corruption probe led to arrests in 2021. A new company was brought in and rebuilding is nearly complete.

As of last week ... half the check-in hall is open, the entire departure level is open (although not many shops/restaurants open yet). Exit security is open with new immigration e-gates (that no one could figure out how to use). Jetbridges have reappeared and are in use for some gates for boarding only. Deplaning is still by stairs and bus to a temporary basement immigration area and baggage claim.

The staff says the airport will fully reopen in just a few weeks - by the end of Feb!
