Never heard of these before I started researching my trip to Quebec...sounds like something you would find in rural Nevada, if you know what I mean.

But since I'll be there in March they sound fascinating. Buy some syrup, have a meal. Anyone have opinions about them? A good one on the road between Montreal and Quebec City?

If you like the following, you will be a happy camper:
Pea Soup, Salted Back Bacon, Maple-Smoked Ham, Baked Beans, Farm-Style Omelette, Traditional Meatballs Stew, Country-Style Sausages, Meat Pie, Pancakes with Maple Syrup, Sugar pie, etc.

They are about 45 minutes west of Montreal (opposite direction from Quebec) and a little expensive but you wont regret the experience!

There are a bunch more along the way between Montreal and Quebec but I dont know any off the top of my head!

The owner and chef of Au Pied de Cochon has decided to open a cabane � sucre as well but there are no menu/prices up yet but that should be a real experience!

PS: The best place to buy maple syrup is at a grocery store... even the sugar shacks inflate their prices (and dont even think of buying it at the airport!)

I second that suggestion. I drove a couple of friends there last winter when we were in the area for work. They wanted to pick up maple syrup from an authentic sugar shack. We had plans to come back for dinner, but it didn't work out. The place is truly authetic and I plan to go back one day soon. The guy who runs the place has a dog that's half wolf or something like that. They have a horse-drawn carriage. The whole deal. Check it out and report back!

Sucrerie de la montagne is a bit of a "show", in other words it's a bit exaggerated for the tourists. The food is *excellent* though. I grew up in rural Quebec and never in my life have I taken a ride in a sleigh. That being said, most people that go to SDLM have a wonderful time.

What I'm getting at is this: It's not a true reflection of the way of life in rural Quebec. May be rural Quebec until the car was invented

I'm not knocking the food down, that's for certain. Even my own mom who grew up on a farm says the food is amazing there.

Thanks all. This is the one I'm going to if anyone knows anything about it. The location is ideal for my drive from Montreal to Quebec. And I know it's reflective of Quebec life maybe 100 years ago....not today....
