GPS on the windshield?

GPS on the windshield?
Today I fly to YYZ and bring my own GPS. Can I fix the GPS on the windshield of the rental car?
Some states in the US (California ...) do not allow this ... How about Ontario & Quebec?

Also do be careful with cellphones in Quebec (excerpt from Ministry of Transportation website):
Use of a cell phone while driving a vehicle is a source of major distractions, which can cause accidents. This is why any hand-held device with a telephone function, such as a cell phone or a mobile pocket PC (e.g., BlackBerry), will be banned starting April 1, 2008 while driving a vehicle.
An offence will result in a fine of $80 to $100 plus costs and three demerit points for drivers at fault. Over the next three months, offenders will receive a warning, but starting July 1, 2008, peace officers may issue a notice of offence. Use of a hand-free phone is still permitted but is not recommended, because it also represents a risk while driving.

After the OP is already here - but there is no specific prohibition of GPS on the windshield in Ontario. And you can talk on your cell phone while you are entering data and steering with your nose.

Here in BC that's my standard rant - It's against the law to drive without 'due care and attention' - So when people start demanding yet another law banning cell phones I just tell people we already have a law and to just enforce that one.
Almost everyone I see driving and chatting is driving without due care and attention.

Here in BC that's my standard rant - It's against the law to drive without 'due care and attention' - So when people start demanding yet another law banning cell phones I just tell people we already have a law and to just enforce that one.
Almost everyone I see driving and chatting is driving without due care and attention.

The enforcers of the law could to, they drive while talking on a radio, phone, typing into a computer and reading a computer. Maybe they are gifted multi taskers.

Hmm. That's an interesting one to enforce. I think if you are steering with your nose you are definitely giving the job "due care and attention." But if you are steering with your feet while holding a cup of coffee in both hands, the OPP may want to give a ticket or at least have Cam Woolley's replacement mention it on the news after a weeked. ("We stopped a fellow who had no floor in the front and was doing 170 on the 400. He was using a wooden stick as a brake!") We obviously need some lawyers or judges to opin here.

Illegal in California to affix anything to the windshield except the rear view mirror, the temp registration paper thing they put on the lower corner at a dealer, and things like the Fasttrak device (and even those are supposed to be in a certain place. I believe one isn't even supposed to have anything hanging from the rear view mirror either.
Having said that, I see plenty of people with windshield mounted GPS. I suspect that it is one of those laws that is rarely enforced unless one is pulled over for something else and you give the officer a hard time.
IIRC I believe that windshield mounting a GPS is also illegal in Minnesota or maybe it is Wisconsin.
