Vancouver Sun article on Beijing Olympics

for those of you looking to fly to the beijing olympics, you better book your hotels soon.

When The Vancouver Sun asked for a quote on a 23-night stay at the Kempinski Hotel in downtown Beijing during the Olympics, the price given was $22,000, or $956 a night. Normally, rooms at the hotel are $163 a night.

I wonder if at that price, the room will come with complimentary "Great Firewall of China" Internet service?

the amusing thing is even a hotel TWO HOURS AWAY from downtown beijing is $400 a night now

"The Sun was also quoted $9,600, or $418 a night, for a 23-night stay at the Holiday Inn Express, which is about a two-hour drive from downtown Beijing."

Plus some other extras? (I hear foreigners, including white males, are in demand given the emigration potential.)

I'm curious if they got quoted some crazy rack rack for Western foreigners and if there's some alternate means to book at a fairly reduced rate. It's not really comparing apples to apples but... when we booked a tour for Beijing (air, hotel, local transportation, & guide) from an agency in Hong Kong, the difference between the English speaking tour and the Chinese speaking version was more than double (if not close to triple) if I recall correctly.

Definitely. That's always the case, regardless of the country.
