Public Transportation in Newfoundland

Hello. I am planning a trip to the French Isles off the coast of Newfoundland. As part of that I'll be flying into St. Johns (unless there is a better gateway), but need to get from there to Fortune to catch the seasonal ferry to France. Is there any way (economically so probably not a taxi ) to get between St John's and Fortune that doesn't involve renting a car? Thanks!

I'm not from Newfoundland so can't give you a specific answer but coming from rural Atlantic Canada, I think I can say with confidence that there is no mass transit outside of St John's and that a rental car is your best bet. Although I would typically be hesitant to recommend it, hitchhiking might be a possibility. This is quite common in rural Atlantic Canada and people think nothing about stopping to pick someone up.

At one time there was a shuttle from St John's, but I don't think it operates any more. SPMExpress would certainly know - check with them.

It would be probably be cheaper to fly from St John's to St Pierre & Miquelon than to get a taxi to Fortune or rent a car. Also, if you're not familiar with the roads and conditions in rural Newfoundland, I'd be a little cautious about driving yourself. I wouldn't advise hitch-hiking - not for safety reasons, but more because you can't afford to miss the ferry, and getting rides all the way to Fortune could be a problem, or at least time-consuming.

THanks for the replies. Any chance that you know of the airlines that fly to St. Pierre and Micholon (sp)? Thanks!
