full disclosure, I haven't been to Montreal in awhile.

BUT

most classic deli places don't change much & my guess is most if not all of the places mentioned in the thread will be good.

I'm hoping someone can chime in with more recent info just to verify.

If classic delicatessens did change, they would no longer be classic — right?!?

I agree — the recommendations already posted are more likely than not to be timeless...

Yes, but are they still in business is what I wondered, as it seems one early recommendation, Ben's, is gone.

I'd prefer not trek across town to find a new tenant in the former home of a smoked meat legend.

You do not have to worry about Schwartz’s Deli, as it is still in business.

Le Roi du Smoked Meat

Add this one to the list: Le Roi du Smoked Meat in Petite Patrie, on St. Hubert (Beaubien station on the Orange Line). I tried it the last time I was in Montreal last autumn and it compared favorably to (if not better than) Schwartz's or Dunn's for me. I went with a classic Smoked Meat sandwich as it was my first visit there, but I'm told their Smoked Meat Pizza is to die for...next visit for sure.

The neighborhood is also a nice change of pace.
