Red face Three nights in Toronto

Since we've never been there, we are planning a few days in Toronto on the way to a longer trip abroad. Is there a hotel near both the airport and the subway that would serve to get us downtown and to other sights? We might rent a car for a day to go to Niagara Falls, but generally would prefer public transportation.

On a related note, how is Uber in Toronto?

You're better off staying in Downtown Toronto. Assuming you're talking about YYZ, it's outside of the city limit and isn't connected to the subway. There's an express train that runs from YYZ to downtown Toronto but it's almost $30 each way. You can take a combination of a bus and subway to downtown Toronto from the airport, but it is not worth the frustration!

Uber in Toronto is fine, however expect surge pricing during rush hour and after midnight in the downtown area.

^agree. Look on Priceline Express Deals and take one of the downtown zones. There is no reason to be near an airport and once at a downtown hotel, you probably can walk to enough stuff to keep you busy. If you're downtown, the streetcars are generally more useful for going to other places - there are only two subway lines and they are normally used for longer trips. One fare is all that is required for any trip including transfers on transit, including subways, buses, and streetcars. The new ones on 510 Spadina from Bloor to Union are an interesting ride, covering the University, Chinatown, Harbourfront Hockey Hall of Fame, CN Tower, Aquarium, and Union Station.

Agree entirely - the other benefit is that since we're in our Canadian winter right now (although honestly it's the warmest winter in years) is that you can choose a hotel connected to the underground network downtown - and do your shopping and some sight-seeing without heading outside for too long.

Hotels

There are many hotels near the subway and in the downtown core. My PF'S are the Intercontinental (either one), the Sheraton Centre and the Hilton.

I agree with the Sheraton Centre - also attached to the underground city paths. It's within walking distance of the Eaton Centre, CN Tower, etc., and if you have status or book a club room, the lounge had a great view of the city. Although far too packed during the mornings with a line waiting to get in.

Sheraton Centre is the main federal government hotel.

I agree with all the above. There is an abundance of hotels within a kilometre of Union Station that fit a wide range of budgets.

If the cost is $30 per person, how much would a taxi cost between the airport and downtown? My wife and I are headed to town later in the year.

The price was recently reduced to $12 per person.

That gets you to Union Station.

A taxi from the airport is about $60, but that of course gets you directly to your hotel.

(All Canadian dollars)
