TN Visa and SSN?

Hey all,

I did a search around and can't find the answers to my specific situation, so hoping somebody with some experience may be able to help.

I am a Canadian citizen, living/working in Canada. I am married to a US/CAD dual citizen, but for tax purposes, I would prefer to avoid US Citizenship at this time.

I am a web based entrepreneur, and, my business partner is a US citizen/resident with businesses that a owned solely by him.

What would be the best/easiest route for me to go in orders get a US SSN to start building a US credit file with? I would also like to be able to utilize sites such as LendingClub.com which requires a US SSN.

I also need to stay living in Canada right now for family reasons.

You could try getting a taxpayer identification number.

See:

Getting U.S. citizenship isn't that easy. First of all, you need to get permanent residence (a.k.a. green card) and have to live in the U.S. before applying for citizenship.

Can't get a SSN with an ITIN.....and I know citizenship is not required in order to get an SSN.

My understanding is that you get an ITIN if you aren't resident in the US at the time you need it (i.e. filing your taxes), or an SSN if you are resident. I got an ITIN in 1997 to file taxes, but in the mid-2000s had to get an SSN to file because I was resident in the US at the time. At least, that was the advice I was given.

Getting either is very easy. Unsurprisingly, the government makes it as easy as possible to get the identification you need to file taxes and pay them money. I got the ITIN at the US embassy in Toronto, and the SSN at a Social Security office.

Citizenship is not required but as a Canadian with no legal presence (working visa, green card etc.) they will not give you a SSN, only an ITIN. And even for that, you can now only apply for an ITIN at the time of your first IRS tax filing unless you meet one of the very specific exceptions that allow you to apply for it separately.

The catch-22 is that, as a Canadian, you want to avoid being considered a US resident for taxation purposes, which is what you would become if you met the criteria for getting a SSN (working visa, green card etc.). They used to give SSN's to Canadians who needed it for taxes, credit cards, bank accounts etc, (that's how I got mine years ago) but now only give ITIN's.
