Driving Mountain View --> Tahoe Best Route?

Hey everyone,

I'm heading to Tahoe today from the South Bay, and I was wondering what the best route was to take....50 through Sacramento? or 88 through Stockton. We're heading to South Lake Tahoe (right by Heavenly). Thanks!

I'd echo that, even though you're probably already gone

The problem with 88 is that you have to take 580 and 205 to get there rather than 680. Traffic through Tracy can be really slow much of the time. With the new Benicia bridge on 680, many of the backups there have been significantly reduced. On the other hand, in the fall the gold aspen along 88 can be spectacular.

Hmm, really? I guess I've always been trained to take 580 up towards 50...and by the time I'm on 580 it just sucks until getting on the 5 or 99.

I too would suggest taking US 50 via Sacramento --- and before that, take 680 to 80 via Benicia (avoid taking 80 through Berkeley because of the congestion). Taking the Altamont Pass 580 to 205 to 5 tends to be pretty congested in my experience.
