Prices jumped dramatically !!
I booked a Full-size car in LAX for a summer vacation in July, total cost for 20 days was $470. However as I need to amend the booking by one day due to travel plans change, I noticed that the price goes up by almost double with the new dates for the rental period !!
I ran a new search on Orbitz and it appears almost all the big car rental agencies have upped their pricing by anywhere between 100% to 200% !!!
From a range of $20-24 per day to $42-$60.
This is some serious price increase! Are the companies looking to make, what the renters would be saving with the lower gas prices? Since this is across all companies, and we are still months away from the rush seasons (which starts in May usually), does anyone know whats going on?

2 things are probably happening. Hertz is buying a lot of new cars, and trying to raise prices to help pay for them. Competitors will follow to some extent. People often book a vacation at least 3 months ahead of time. So now that would be for the summer. In the summer, threads show plans being made for Christmas and Spring Break.

If you didn't pre-pay, keep your original rental, and make a brand new rental for your new plans. Keep checking a couple times a week as prices fluctuate often. I recently booked into DAL. When I originally booked, prices were over $400 for a full size on my dates. After a couple weeks I was able to book at $148. Now it's back around $325.
Just keep trying, and make sure to search all brands.
