Thumbs down MODERATED: Budget YVR Mileage Charge Outside of BC

Alert. This location uses a rare grift, charging 50 freaking cents per kilometre if you drive your vehicle out of BC. (That would be an added charge of $300 including taxes, if you take a short sightseeing drive to Seattle, only a few hours south.) Alternately, they will offer to substitute the kilometre fee for another $10 to $30 a day tacked on to your charge, depending on whether you plan to drive to Washington, Oregon or California. This, for an unlimited mileage rate! Do not count on Budget to resolve this outrage for you, either. I just received a response that amounted to "Next time read the fine print, stupid." Avoid Budget YVR at all costs. This is an outlaw operation, enabled by the deluded international management.

1. Welcome to FT.
2. Sorry, but this one's on you. Budget goes wayyyyy out of its way to get you to read the specific terms for the specific location and tells you that it's not "fine print" and that you really need to read it. It's hardly on Budget that you didn't.
3. How about changing the thread title to what really happened?

Here is what Budget says for the specific location:

IMPORTANT: This isn't simply "fine print" our lawyers ask us to include.
...
Location Exceptions:
At your particular rental location, these Location Exception terms apply in addition to all other terms below.
.
...
• Allowed only with permission from Budget office. Canada: Unlimited kilometers are only available for travel within British Columbia. Travel to, or within any other province is strictly prohibited. Customers driving within other provinces will be charged $0.50 CAD per km, for every km driven, during the entire rental. USA: Only available within the state of Washington, Oregon and California with additional charges of $10.00 CAD, $15.00 CAD or $30.00 CAD per day will be applied to the rental. Travel to, or within any other state is strictly prohibited. Customers driving within other states will be charged $0.50 CAD per km, for every km driven, during the entire rental

Thanks for the welcome, and the advice, but a grift is still a grift. None of the other rental agencies at YVR impose similar charges, nor does any other Budget location in any other jurisdiction, of which I'm aware. You obviously feel otherwise, but IMHO this game of "Gotcha" is cheesy beyond belief, and undermines the credibility of the global brand. Check out the other posts. This is a rouge operation, which has attracted class action litigation.

FT isn't a place for stalking horses for the class action crowd.

Title seems inaccurate to me. How did you get swindled??? You failed to read the contract. You got swindled because you were never taught to read?

Because they, and probably all major rental car companies these days, track the car via GPS.

The poster should have read the contract BUT let's not let that take away from the original point. This policy sucks and Budget should not be allowing it

Car Accident / Parking or Speeding/Red Light Ticket
They also prohibit you from renting unless you fly into YVR. I've gotten a warning several times.

What a dumb rule. The repair frauds in budget Vancouver have put this company on my do not rent list forever.
