I suspect the "welcome pack" consists of a Blue Card and a load of bumph to read.

Not even that.

It's just a card.

It does come attached to a leaflet/brochure that gives a brief run down of the benefits of being a BAEC member. All of which you would already know. If you didnt, why would you have joined

Why even give out cards at all? Do people really need them?

I suppose that it does help with brand recognition and people remembering their membership numbers though.

I got mine after joining, about two years ago - can't remember if I flew first.

I think it's nice to have, as you can use it on ther check-in machines.
However, mine did it's last flight today, so if anyone need it, etc...

1) great for SSCI
2) great when BA staff ask for ID on domestic flights

When my Dad joined aeons ago he got leather wallets and all sorts of goodies, including Blue baggage tags.
In the olden days, most FF programmes required you to submit eligible (i.e. high fare) boarding pass stubs to be allowed to join. Joining the programme at all was an honour. Nowadays, anyone and everyone can join programmes on line and I guess that's why they don't give out goodies.

FWIW, I'm off to Vietnam on holiday over Christmas. I'll do some domestic flights with VN and thought it might be fun to take out membership of their FF programme. It's free and painless over the internet. But the first status tier (silver) requires a single flight with VN. This tier brings no benefit that I can see other than a card.

Well 24 hours after my first miles posted I received an e-mail from BA inviting me to order a card and the option to order a 'membership pack' is now there on the website.
