"You can marry more money in 5 minutes than you can make in a lifetime." Then fly around all you want.

(Unfortunately, I didn't follow this advice!)

Pre-sales / Programme Management for a medium sized international analytics firm. I fly all over EMEA regularly (Y or W depending on distance) and only fly J if I get an upgrade (my firm makes me book via Egencia so can't use Avios - Grrrrrrrr) or I book it myself.

Finance - but 99% of my travel is private... holidays / visiting friends and family.

Having read the first few emails on this thread from the pre-GFC (Great Financial Crisis) days, let's say the financial services sector isn't what it used to be back then. Those were the heydays of the industry, and it will only go downhill from there. Many FinTech organisations around that will make a lot of current finance jobs redundant in the years to come.

And it's quite obvious really... finance is pretty much data. I can't believe it took the techies so long to 'disrupt' this industry.

Work in government policy, trips overseas pretty well all private. Board level director level sign off for any flight required should there ever be a need, and cheapest must be booked.

Ashamed to admit I'm about to enter my 6th year of being a full time economics student. With at least another two year to go to get my bachelors and masters.
Although I had two fairly succesfull internet businesses (both in the early days of cryptocurrency adoption) which I sold that help me fund my travels, mainly to visit family in London and NYC. So not all time was spent goofing around.

I'm curious, as I'm doing something similar now but in a mid-size company - do you get to travel on the job on a regular basis?

IT Account manager (for big US tech vendors)

Work was always Y, except for medical reasons - so managed the odd J / (F when cheaper) due to a bad leg.

Current company, no travel due to COVID.

Post COVID personal will still be 95% plus of flying.

Interesting read this.

I run my own consulting firm that works with individuals targeting top tier universities such as Harvard, Stanford, MIT etc and I also do organizational development for companies and teach at a top Mexican University. My travel at the moment next to zero but was split 5050 between work and leisure. Have to go back to uk at least twice a year in pursuit of my doctorate.

Programme manager for UK based major telco. Very limited work flying- have done LCY-GLA and STN-BFS (U2) in my 20 years with the company. Plenty of train travel (sadly) pre-covid.

Might be an opportunity to visit some of our offshore teams in Chennai. I believe our company policy has recently changed from J to W. (J can be requested if in a meeting the following day, but requires MD sign off.

With a large young family, we don't get overseas often. 1 x perfectly timed trip to TFS last February.

Solution Architect for a high tech manufacturer. Business travel was limited to CONUS (though I do have customers based in HI) in Y, unless the upgrade gods were kind to me. The majority of my travels were for leisure, usually in premium cabins, especially back to the U.K. on BA and that gave me the status to make the business travel just that bit more bearable. I joined my companies world wide team just before COVID hit, so I was expecting a bit more international travel. Oh well! Haven’t travelled for business since late 19 and my only 2 leisure trips since then have been back to the U.K. for the holidays.
