Phoenix never had a blackout!

Today at BA's flight disruptions page:
http://www.britishairways.com/travel...lightops_en_us

it first says:

"As a result of a major power outage in parts of North East USA and Eastern Canada on Thursday evening several flights have been disrupted.

We apologise fully for the disruption which is clearly beyond our control but we are doing all we can to help customers."

So far so good. It affected airports in the NE US and eastern Canada, I completely understand.

But below that:

"As a result of knock-on disruption the following flights have been cancelled:"

And in the chart that follows it shows among the cancelled flights:

BA289
London, Heathrow on 17 August Phoenix on 17 August

BA288
Phoenix on 17 August
London, Heathrow on 18 August

Huh? What in the world do nonstop flights between PHX and LHR (or are they not really nonstop?) have to do with a blackout that never affected any place within a thousand miles of either of these cities?

Did they simply choose this opportunity to sacrifice a low-booked flight to provide another plane/crew for extra "catchup" flights in busier NE US markets or something?

Or is there an unrelated problem today at PHX that they're lumping together with the NE blackout?

Don't know but one obvious candidate reason is that there are aircraft which are not in the places where they are supposed to be. If you are short of aircraft you obviously have to make commercial decisions about which flights to operate and which to cancel.

They say it themselves: As a result of knock-on disruption

This could mean lack of planes, staff or needing that plane for something else...

Could not have put it better - fwiw HKG also suffered a cancellation as a result of the knock-on effect.

Isn't the LHR-PHX aircraft an inbound of one of the NYC planes that arrives in the AM at LHR? This would explain why equipment wasn't were it needed to be... That being said, a little odd to not have a spare or a NYC allocated plane still at LHR that could have been used, thus only impacting affected cities.

Not if operating NYC (or other affected city) flights - particularly making sure that backlog of stranded pax was cleared - was more commercially important and/or profitable and/or would just move more people than operating the aircraft to PHX. I'm sure many commercial judgements had to be made about the best overall use of the assets that were available and not stranded.

I think it could possibly be because of the gas issue in Phoenix right now. Apparently the power outage disrupted gas pumping plants and Phoenix is getting really hit hard.
