As Qatar use Avios is it best to book an avios flight direct with them?

Has anyone cancelled a booking since the QR / Avios merger?
BA is £35 to change or cancel. All QR redemption's seem to include a non-refundable booking fee on top of the change / cancel fees, how does this work?
