What would the original price have been?
FCO in ET is 6500/7500 avios per person and VCE is the same. There should have been one of the pricing options listed which was for the previous avios level. If I look at LHR-FCO off peak I am offered:

10000 Avios + £ 0.50
8250 Avios + £ 8.75
6500 Avios + £ 17.00
3900 Avios + £ 40.50
3300 Avios + £ 45.50
2150 Avios + £ 55.50

27 December northbound it's just the 0620 flight which has any Y reward availability. For J you can get two seats on the 0620, 1815, and 2105 flights. Prices per person in J are:

14000 Avios + £ 0.50
11000 Avios + £ 15.50
9000 Avios + £ 25.50
6500 Avios + £ 45.50
5600 Avios + £ 55.50
5000 Avios + £ 65.50
Southbound on 29th there are only two LHR services with any availability but it's 1 J seat on each (0705 and 1355). There are 4 seats in J to LGW at 2115. Prices per person are:

14000 Avios + £ 0.50
11000 Avios + £ 15.50
9000 Avios + £ 25.50
6500 Avios + £ 45.50
5600 Avios + £ 55.50
5000 Avios + £ 65.50

Peak, 30,000 Avios + £35.

Full list of pricing here - https://www.headforpoints.com/2019/0...ng-by-route-2/

You got a bad deal irrespective of peak or off-peak. Was there really no cash ticket for under £400, which would have made cash better value?

Thanks guys!

I'm guessing I am now a victim of this trial, albeit not terribly.

The booking was made over 7 days ago.

I'm guessing they won't allow me to revert back to the original level without paying the £35 each penalty now? Which I'm guessing wouldn't make it worth changing?

Thanks KARFA. When I look online I don't see those prices. Is this a phone call required now?

It shouldn't be, you should see those prices too. I must admit I just looked at one ways not that should be an issue. If you can't see the lower avios prices then you may have to call but they should offer you the same price points

BTW, my mistake I only looked at LHR for the northbound, I should have put LON in rather than LHR. There is quite a bit of availability on LCY services too on 27th so 1540d 3 in Y, 1710d 7 in Y, 1805d 9+ in Y, 1915 9+ in Y. Per person in Y exLCY on 27th is

8000 Avios + £ 0.50
6250 Avios + £ 10.50
4500 Avios + £ 15.50
3300 Avios + £ 35.50
2800 Avios + £ 40.50
2500 Avios + £ 45.50

Actually, there is a positive side to this “trial” in that you can cancel and only lose the cash part, ie. £1. So, if there is still availability, cancel your original award and rebook at the old levels.

What has happened? I wanted to book one of these Reward Saver flights for later in the year (it's not certain that I will travel on the particular date), but not only has the trail stopped, they seem to have increased all RFS prices!

That doesn’t look like a RFS. Have you earned any Avios during the past 12 months?

I've booked a few flights from TXL to LHR this morning, for various times during 2020, and still get the expected options starting at 8000 Avios + 50p.

Happy New Year headingwest, BA has missed you too! But it is interesting to see what RFS qualification brings in terms of the price impact. Happy future flightings.

Seperately to that, AGL will offer flexibilty: more avios or less avios but only where it makes sense for them, buying your avios for less than say 0.6p or selling some of the 9k back to you for >1p.
As this "trial" is still going on, and faced again with having to justify a decision about which option to choose, I've had a go at another way of visualising the possible valuations. This time, it was simply by taking different possible valuations of Avios and working out the equivalent totals for each pricing combination. I've used 1.00p, 0.67p, 0.50p and 0.33p per Avios to get the following numbers (for a round trip), which seem broadly to confirm that the base case remains the old Avios figure.

Code:

I also had a go at a more sophisticated pence per Avios calculation, working from each pricing option as a baseline and going up and down, but it produced a pretty dense and incomprehensible set of figures - so they weren't worth posting.

and yet we still have the error that combining one of these flights with a long-haul redemption will add the higher amount of Avios (for which the 50p redemption would apply) yet still charging the passenger full taxes and fees.
