Yesterday I flew EK434 DXB-BNE and the flight was not full.
The crew offered us seats 52 HJK (yes, all three !) for the two of us. Bulkhead seats with more legroom. And I saw a lot of empty seats. Now I understand why some 380s are not profitable. I bet that all pax on our flight could fit in a 77W.

BTW, there were two babies of the same parents, screaming and crying almost the entire 14 hour flight, which kept us from sleep despite having nice seats. Next time baby cry noise canceling headphones with us...

It also matters how busy the return flight was, common misconception to judge viability of a route by a single cabin in one direction on one day which might not be representative for the year. Also J and F loads may have been high

Although never really envisaged or intended as a cargo plane (unlike the 747) and wouldn't be well utilized as a normal cargo plane (at common densities) I wonder if one or two might find future life as specialist cargo carriers. Perhaps carrying A320 wings or something that needs the space but has lower density than standard air freight. Probably not, but stranger things have happened.

They've already got the Beluga for that

I flew the 380 for the first time last year (DOH to MEL); out in club, back in first (free upgrade). I loved it. But I think the 350 is a nicer aircraft, and clearly easier to fill up with pax Always a sad day when an innovative aircraft reaches the end of the line. I wonder if we'll see a double-decker again?

Perhaps a narrow seat economy with 3-3 on the upper deck and 2-4-2 on the lower deck, with 2 engines and lower costs per passenger than A351, B787-10 and B779.

Will we see a narrow seat economy 3-5-3 big twin?

I sincerely hope not, because that would be beyond awful. Probably quite hard to evacuate quickly in an emergency, too.

So basically a DC-10 with modern narrow seats? ( I know the DC-10 wasn't twin engine, but close for cabin size)

It will be an interesting challenge to get the aerodynamics right to allow for a double-deck twin

For reasons talked about above, the aerodynamics might be even less of a problem than building the monster engines. If the New York Times reckons that the 380 was a "jaw-dropping" airframe, wait until you see the donks on the new big twin!

Of course, and that was just an example, and one never knows when extra capacity might be needed!

The A380plus would have had 3-5-3 economy on the lower deck if it were built.

The optimised cabin layout based on the ‘cabin enablers’ presented at Aircraft Interiors Expo (AIX), allows up to 80 additional seats* with no compromise on comfort: redesigned stairs, a combined crew-rest compartment, sidewall stowage removal, a new 9-abreast seat configuration in premium economy and 11-abreast in economy.
