Welcome to the thread. This is a continuation of the highly popular 2018 Tier Point thread (found here). We keep track of other prices, as well as useful reference information for those planning tier point runs.

Please read the first few posts in this thread first as it contains lots of information which may answer your question.

This is a community-maintained wiki post. Please add important information to it or correct outdated information by clicking the "Edit" button below.

A new guideline thread for TP meetups has been created on 31 March 2020. If you would like other members to join your TP, or if you want to organize a TP run with other members. Please visit there. From the first few posts over there you could see the active ( confirmed ) TP meetings and the links to their relevant discussion threads, connect with other members and learn the details about the run. Need a year-end TP run (ex-LON) to make / retain status?
Some tips for searching for the year-end TP run for newcomers, the below is indicative only, but hopefully provides a bit of guidance for relatively straightforward runs ex-LON. Some information on how to use ITA matrix is in post 4 of this thread (or just click here) along with these ideas, might come in handy. Feel free to share results, problems or general questions in the thread as these may not always work and there might be better deals out there...

For overnight trips remember to check BA and Iberia for their flights and hotel option as well, can get hotel for almost no extra cost at times

Need 80 TPs or fewer
Club Europe return somewhere close by is best - DUB, AMS and JER usually cheapest along with UK domestic returns. Additionally you may find that trips in to mainland Europe require a one night stay whereas the cheapest domestic CE returns do not have any minimum stay so can be booked as a same day return. If doing a back to back AMS and JER can be easier than DUB for an immediate turnaround - more information can be found in the back to back thread listed in the forum dashboard. The BA.com low fare finder can be very useful.

If you need as few as 45 TPs you might consider booking economy flights and hoping for a proactive online upgrade offer - but they're not guaranteed to materialise (so not one if you have no more time left in your TP collection year). Alternatively, booking a return to one of the 40 tier point destinations with one way in CE and the return in ET (or vice versa if cheaper). UK domestic route, Bilbao, Jersey and Amsterdam seem the most cost effective for this.

Need 85-120 TPs
Iberia flights via MAD to regional Spanish airports will get you 120 TPs as the domestic Spanish flights are 20 TPs in business. Under £300 including hotel can be available. Check BIO, GRX, VLC, BCN, SVQ etc. Example here

Need 125-160 TPs
Take a look at the shorthaul plus routes earning 80 TPs each way in business listed in the first post of this thread (here), MLA, IST, HEL and RAK are usually available. If time sensitive take a look at BA flight and hotel option to HEL, where you can usually get the BA flight out on a Saturday, airport hotel and return on Sunday for well under £500.

Alternative options include positioning to JER and flying JER-LGW-XXX (AMS usually works well and avoids switching airports).

Need more than 160 TPs
You'll most likely be heading north then - OSL or VNO via HEL will get you 240 TPs, as will JER-LGW/LHR-HEL e.g. LHR-HEL-OSL for £520.
DUB-LHR-HEL return (or return to LHR) is currently a very efficient way of hitting 200-240 TPs

They are certain that my flights taken on BA do not count, just because they have an AA flight number attached.

Any guidance would be appreciated. I should have reached silver membership and so my flight today and tomorrow on BA should attract the 50 per cent bonus avios for silver members, but I am only getting 25 per cent now. I tried to call BA to get a second opinion, but have been on hold for over an hour and the lines are now closed.

Hi

In regards to bags, if I did for example SFO-LAX-JFK-LHR-HEL-ARN, would a bag be checked all the way to ARN even if there was a night stop at LHR included?

Thanks

It should as long you have a transit and not stopover. At least that is my experience. Last year I flew a similar route, but AA could only book to LHR. But when I got to JFK I talked to the BA agent there at the check in and they checked to my final destination.

I have never ever had my bags tagged all the way to my final destination when I've had an overnight at LHR. This includes as recently as this month.

Is this part of a TP run deal you’ve found?

Just let them know what you want, either check all the way through or collect and re-check in LHR if you need it.

Has anyone managed to successfully book this via book with matrix? I can not get any site to replicate this amazing fare. I have called the flight center in London too and they quoted £5000+. How did you guys book this?

AA should not be able to through check the bags in their system if the connection is over 12 hrs?

Advice needed - AA schedule change on TP Run INV-LAX

Hi all,

I need a bit of advice on the following:

Booked a TP Run for this November through AA as follows: INV-LHR-HEL-JFK-SFO-LAX, all in J. There has been a schedule change which means I only have 23 minutes to make the SFO-LAX connection on the 5th November. JFK-SFO arrives 20:07 and SFO-LAX now departs 20:30 instead of 22:00. It is very unlikely I would be able to make it, and even if I run, my bags will most likely be left behind. HBO not possible.... try to convince my wife

I checked and the 20:30 SFO-LAX is the last flight of the day, so in my view these are the only options:

1. Call AA and ask to be rebooked for a flight next day. Not ideal as that would mean I lose my hotel booking at LAX, and also we already have some plans for the morning and would be much better to sleep at LAX. In any case, would AA cover the hotel cost at SFO?

2. Call AA and ask to be rebooked on a JFK-LAX flight, hence arriving the 5th November at night as scheduled. The only problem is, will I lose the 40TP for the SFI-LAX sector or would I be able to ask for ORC?

3. Do nothing and risk losing the connection and be force to make last minute arrangements. In this case, given that is all in one booking and the original sector departed the EU, would I be able to claim for EU261 compensation? Also, how is AA managing these kind of situations? Would they provide hotel, meals, etc?

4. Any other option I have not thought about but the experts in this forum could provide

To the moderators: I have posted this here given that the main purpose of the flight is a TP Run with BA... but please let me know if this is not the right place.

Thanks!!!

Thanks for the replies. It is a ARN-HEL-SFO/LAX-SFO-JFK-LHR-HEL-ARN, just over £2000 at the end of August. The outbound leg is before my tier year ends so no use trying to get extra points then. Two connections allowed in EU and US each way, 150 euros for a stopover. Dropping the bags at LHR would be an advantage!

I'm guessing 23 minutes will be the below the minimum connection time at SFO (it's certainly below sensible connection time) so the system will at some point auto rebook you. You won't have an option to do nothing and run for the connection. Schedule changes are very common on AA up to about two months before travel, so they won't cover the cost of overnighting in SFO.

In my experience, ORC only applies to IRROPS on the day of travel, not a schedule change 3 months ahead of travel.

The big advantage though, is AA are very flexible about reroutes arising from a schedule change so you can propose a sensible reroute and in my experience, the original fare rules don't apply so you may be able to route back through London or fly through other US airports. PHL and MIA have A330 and B777 services to LAX so JFK-MIA-LAX may be an option to preserve tier points or HEL-(US gateway)-JFK-LAX. If preserving TPs are more important than the Transcon flatbed, JFK-CLT-LAX would also be an option.

I've found research and proposing a reroute to the agent is the best way forward in these situations.
