Welcome to the thread. This is a continuation of the highly popular 2018 Tier Point thread (found here). We keep track of other prices, as well as useful reference information for those planning tier point runs.

Please read the first few posts in this thread first as it contains lots of information which may answer your question.

This is a community-maintained wiki post. Please add important information to it or correct outdated information by clicking the "Edit" button below.

A new guideline thread for TP meetups has been created on 31 March 2020. If you would like other members to join your TP, or if you want to organize a TP run with other members. Please visit there. From the first few posts over there you could see the active ( confirmed ) TP meetings and the links to their relevant discussion threads, connect with other members and learn the details about the run. Click here to access that thread.

Please remember to:
  • Convert currencies to GBP, rounding to the nearest pound.
  • Post full routes and full booking classes.
  • Note any restrictions on booking in the Notes section.
  • List in order of price per tier point within the relevant departure area.

Please see the links at the bottom of the wiki for archives of runs from previous years.

Need a year-end TP run (ex-LON) to make / retain status?
Some tips for searching for the year-end TP run for newcomers, the below is indicative only, but hopefully provides a bit of guidance for relatively straightforward runs ex-LON. Some information on how to use ITA matrix is in post 4 of this thread (or just click here) along with these ideas, might come in handy. Feel free to share results, problems or general questions in the thread as these may not always work and there might be better deals out there...

For overnight trips remember to check BA and Iberia for their flights and hotel option as well, can get hotel for almost no extra cost at times

Need 80 TPs or fewer
Club Europe return somewhere close by is best - DUB, AMS and JER usually cheapest along with UK domestic returns. Additionally you may find that trips in to mainland Europe require a one night stay whereas the cheapest domestic CE returns do not have any minimum stay so can be booked as a same day return. If doing a back to back AMS and JER can be easier than DUB for an immediate turnaround - more information can be found in the back to back thread listed in the forum dashboard. The BA.com low fare finder can be very useful.

If you need as few as 45 TPs you might consider booking economy flights and hoping for a proactive online upgrade offer - but they're not guaranteed to materialise (so not one if you have no more time left in your TP collection year). Alternatively, booking a return to one of the 40 tier point destinations with one way in CE and the return in ET (or vice versa if cheaper). UK domestic route, Bilbao, Jersey and Amsterdam seem the most cost effective for this.

Need 85-120 TPs
Iberia flights via MAD to regional Spanish airports will get you 120 TPs as the domestic Spanish flights are 20 TPs in business. Under £300 including hotel can be available. Check BIO, GRX, VLC, BCN, SVQ etc. Example here

Need 125-160 TPs
Take a look at the shorthaul plus routes earning 80 TPs each way in business listed in the first post of this thread (here), MLA, IST, HEL and RAK are usually available. If time sensitive take a look at BA flight and hotel option to HEL, where you can usually get the BA flight out on a Saturday, airport hotel and return on Sunday for well under £500.

Alternative options include positioning to JER and flying JER-LGW-XXX (AMS usually works well and avoids switching airports).

Need more than 160 TPs
You'll most likely be heading north then - OSL or VNO via HEL will get you 240 TPs, as will JER-LGW/LHR-HEL e.g. LHR-HEL-OSL for £520.
DUB-LHR-HEL return (or return to LHR) is currently a very efficient way of hitting 200-240 TPs

Hi,

Can someone please review this, I am a total novice, but basically visiting family over New Year (based in Jersey City) and want to squeeze in some extra tier points for low cost and without care of convenience. I am based south UK but will be in Glasgow over xmas. Does this work in terms of timings/layovers and does it get 520 TPs pp or does the PSA Airlines/American Eagle leg not count? Can I book in one go over the phone all with BA? Anything I've not considered?

Thanks

That will be 520 TPs per traveller - the American Eagle count as normal.

I did a quick search for your dates/routes, and you can save ~£20 per passenger if you take the AA codes on your transatlantic flights, and this would be an AA ticket (booked via AA). This would be beneficial to you when the inevitable schedule changes happen in the next 2-3 months and you will need to alter your booking - AA are usually far more accommodating versus a similar booking via BA.

Personally I would not go for the AA ticket for such a small saving. If payment is going to be made with a BA Black Amex then the 4000 extra Avios immediately negate the saving. If there was disruption on the return then EU261 won’t apply to an AA ticket.

I have made good savings before booking via AA over BA but for such a small saving I’d be sticking with BA

I’m thinking about a TP run for the first time and would be very grateful for some suggestions. Generally I fly enough to renew silver comfortably, but have just hit 1000 TPs and am hearing the siren call of gold. My membership year doesn’t expire until early October, so I’d like to do a couple of short haul day trips or weekends in August or September which don’t cost the earth (my wife already thinks I’m bonkers...). I am based in JER - presumably the best bet is a couple of JER-LGW + 80 TP European jaunts, plus a quick back to back to LGW? Is HEL still a good option? Thanks very much.

What have you found so far?

The best thing to do is to have a look at the usual suspects for 80TPs from London with the lowest fare finder and then combine with the JER ticket. I'm afraid that without a sale going on, you'll have to spend a Saturday night somewhere, unless you nest 2 trips together a few weekends apart. That'll give you 480 TPs.

I'm confused as to how BA is better with EU261 than AA. I thought AA was very flexible when rebooking, and EU261 wouldn't apply to US domestics be it AA or BA, and would for both on the return.

I believe EU261 would apply to a BA return, but not AA.

Thanks very much. I had been playing around with various 80TP destinations, but was struggling to find anything under 1k. However I had forgotten that you still need a Saturday night for the cheap CE returns, so I will have another look.

Has anyone ever found decent tier points runs to Australia ex EU or are we just better just doing the normal checking with QR ex Scandinavia?

Australia isn't really a "TP run" because you're only getting 2 long-hauls each way out of it - i.e. connecting in DOH, HKG, SIN, KUL etc. - despite a much higher fare. There's no single airline that will get you more long haul connections on a single ticket. At best you could maybe get BA or QF to tag on a European / Australian leg, but the usual HEL games don't really apply without the TATL joint venture in play.

If you just want a cheap way to get to Australia in J with Oneworld, that's a different question.

This is incorrect.

I've sometimes found routes like the following for about 2000 GBP. Don't think there are good fares on CX/BA right now though, but when they pop up, it's worth trying the following routes:

X-HKG-PER-SYD
X-HKG-SYD-PER
X-SIN-SYD-PER

This would be 840TP. Quite reasonable if you want to go to Australia anyway.

Well, you can come up with some more creative routing ex GOT or ARN for example: GOT-HEL-DOH-PER-BNE/OOL return for about 2200 GBP for 920TP.

As above, the poster mentioning only getting 2 long hauls is incorrect.

I've flown OSL-LHR-SIN-SYD-PER and return (with a ten day stop in SYD coming back from PER) for around £2200 a few times in recent years (the days of getting this route for £1700 disappeared with the plummet of GBP after the Brexit vote). That's 960TPs (SYD-PER is over 2000 miles).

If you could build in a HEL stop on the fare (never tried), you could get another 160TPs (So OSL-HEL-LHR-SIN-SYD-PER).

It doesn't matter who sells the ticket, operating carrier matters. EU261 applies to *all* airlines departing from the EU and to European airlines departing from outside of the EU. So:

LHR-IAD operated by AA - EU261 works
LHR-IAD operated by BA - EU262 works

IAD-LHR operated by AA - EU261 doesn't work
IAD-LHR operated by BA - EU261 works
