The check-in / ticketing staff always seem to ask for ID when AUPing a domestic flight and when I've done same day change at airport, so handy to carry on the off chance you need to do something like that.
Not needed at all though if going straight through security. I was initially surprised that they didn't check anything at gate, and thinking about it they have once or twice but not sure if that was agent on some form of auto pilot.
