Using Avios on Cathay

Using Avios on Cathay
I was trying to phantom book from YYZ to HKG and the online booking would not let use avios to book a flight that included a cathay flight and a BA flight. (I realise this is a long way to get home but since I want to use points its the only way) Is this usual? There was no problem if I wanted the direct flight on Cathay or if I flew exclusively BA.

Shouldn't be a problem. Did you check availability on individual sectors? If it's there then BA should be willing to book it on the phone for no extra fees.
The other thing to check out depending on what class you're travelling, would be trying to get two non-BA partners in there. Maybe take AA to JFK then BA to London and CX on to HKG. A different award chart applies for this and it might be cheaper!
