Op ups

I have always heard of this term but not 100% sure what it means other than it is short for operational upgrades. Anyway, I was just wondering, would the chance for me to get a lucky op up increase if I checked it online or when I in the airport or does it really matter?

You are almost guaranteed one if you are well-shaved, and wear a nice suit and tie. Not a lot of people know that.

lol, I would have guessed that. I guess I would be well shaved but not sure if I can be bothered just to wear a suit and tie for a chance for an op up... I have only gotten lucky once when I travelled with Dragon Air. I was like 20 back then I think - not even a stub of hair and definitely no suit and tie lol.

I'll bet you even fewer know that it's almost guaranteed if you really dress properly for flying. As this is British Airways, a morning coat and striped trousers with all the appropriate accessories, or white tie and tails (whichever is appropriate for the time of day) are expected and should definitely secure you an op-up.

Checking in online increases your chances of op-up.

Especially if it's your birthday, you're on your honeymoon, you're 6'6" tall and you've got a bad back.

Do I need the accent and glasses to go along with that (apocryphal phrase I think)

Alternatively you can pitch up at (SYD) check-in, in jeans and a t-shirt ...

...rather in need of a shave and a shower...

...with a big backpack...

...while travelling on a mistake fare <cough>

Best way to get an op-up, look for a dykwia type* kicking off at checkin desk, stand in queue behind them, when it's your turn at desk be nice and comment about "what was all that about" etc, they may give you the op-up the dykwia type* was demanding....

*Dykwia types are best identified by (amongst other things) their clean shave, nice suit and tie

When travelling with male friends in the past we used to spend a few minutes trying to find a more effeminate member of staff at the check in area and would target them. Better rate of success than any other method for a Blue member.

That was a few years ago and am pretty sure today 'computers rule'.

(With apologies to any effeminate members of check in staff out there...)
