I don't see this as a strategy at all... The point of being in an Alliance is to prevent having to do most of the point-to-point flights yourself. I believe the 'thought' behind the 787 and A350 is to increase the number of flights to popular hubs, offering more choice for departure times, not to offer more destinations. Maybe they want to be a little less dependent on the 'standard hubs' that you would be if you went 'all A380'.

I don't see IAG letting IB and BA compete on the Latin American market too much, so SCL I don't see happening soon. Too bad though... It is a nice destination.
