  • Some TP runs can be booked online at aa.com. Be sure to use the Sort by schedule option in order to locate the exact flights you found on the ITA Matrix tool.

Will also be doing US 757 and 321 for first time on way back via PHX so better brace ourselves.....
You might believe that but I have just checked the AA flight schedules out as far as they are published and all direct flights from LAX to HNL and back are listed as Boeing 757.
AA use their 763 planes from DFW to HNL and still fly a daily 763 LAX to MIA return flight - this was one of my flights last week. The 763 with business seats which are classified as First for domestic US flights are miles better than either the 757 leather or cloth First seats. You also get a Samsung tablet to use for IFE on the 763 which is very good.

Thanks for posting regarding the Qatar flights.

I did find the following:
03/10
CPH-DOH-BKK
05/10
BKK-DOH-CPH
ITA matrix 1517gbp

Qatar website 1706gbp.

Not too far off but I guess not a true TP run as it is just over £3/TP. I won't be going this weekend but it was an interesting exercise for me to learn the process a bit more.

I shall refrain from cluttering up this thread further unless i have something of interest or a query for a genuine trip.

Thanks for your advice thus far though.

For weeks now I don't get access to the BA TP calculator.

ok, so I didn't just 'believe' it but that's what recent emails from BA and AA told me when they changed their schedules. our MIA - LAX flight got moved 45 mins earlier (and onto 738 rather than 763 though I know - as you say - there's still a daily 763 rotation) and our LAX HNL got changed by 5 mins and when I logged on to check seats, it was a 763.

Have just re-checked. BA MMB says AA31 on Saturday 28th november as 767. AA.com confirms that:

American Airlines
31
Los Angeles (LAX)
29 November 2014 08:05 AM

Travel Time : 6 h 5 m
Cabin Class : First
Seat : 2B , 2A
Honolulu (HNL)
29 November 2014 12:10 PM

Booking Code : A
Plane Type : 763

So, though I know that changes can happen again, it looks like we'll be on a 763 to HNL from LAX.

on the 757, I agree with you that the brown/grey leather seats are more comfy than the blue ('newer') ones though when I made such statements (upthread with pics of the various domestic F seats, not everyone agreed with me).

I work in Hawaii every 2 months or so, and indeed the so-called unconverted 763 (so not the new generation seating which goes on international sectors) very occasionally goes from LAX to HNL. Usually the 763s run the DFW to HNL service and I think I've had a Maui in a 763 too. In the past there was always at least one HNL which was a 763, but it now appears to be the quieter periods when they take one other rotation off, or busy periods when they need the capacity of a wide body. Also they use the DFW-HNL-LAX-HNL-DFW rotation occasionally.

757s are a pig to fly in, and actually I now really dislike the leather beige version, it's not good on the back and the seat width is too wide to be useful, and I'm quite tubby. So give me the cloth version any day, but never the bulkhead seat if wanting to sleep, both types are too cramped. US airways actually have a more comfortable seat, in my view, but typically no power (I need to work on my PC on that sector), and the food/serviice isn't good. But the 763s, even being the old version, is definitely a welcome relief when I see it on the schedule. However don't count your chickens.....

So if you had to choose a pot-luck plane (which you wouldn't, as you'd have it all planned) between US Airways from PHX - HNL or AA from LAX - HNL, which would you go for? I've priced up the TP run that diamond club freeloader suggested (DUB - HNL) but have never flown US. Unfortunately it's not available until 1 July next year, but 4th July in HNL may be nice!

Yes, I am doing a trip involving US flights next Easter, so JFK-PHX-SFO and the reverse. First time on US for me as well so interested in any views on what to expect, pinkcat has made me think I should have gone on AA. I think the US flights are all down as A321s atm.

Also look at exCPH beyond 1 July 2015 if you haven't already done so, you may find it is cheaper than exDUB with some prices noted here. The advantage of DUB though is that there is going to be a LCY service so you can do same day DUB-LCY-JFK to connect on to BA1 in the morning. For exCPH you will need to come across from CPH the day before and pick up BA1 in the morning after a night at home.

And finally, I am on BA1 on 2 July 2015 so you may wish to join/avoid that flight depending on your preferences

Interesting, the AA desktop timetables say it is a 757 but aa.com for 28th November and all that week says flight 31 is a 763. It seems to revert back to a 757 on December 2nd but then comes back for Saturdays in December. I hope it is for your sake as the 763 is much more comfortable than the 757.
I wonder if there is something on in HNL over that period as they do not normally run a 763 to HNL from LAX. If they continue to offer the 763 to HNL then I would take this plane to HNL in preference to taking a direct 757 to OGG or KOA. The connecting flight on Hawaiian 717 is quite short and frequent.

The older seat seems to be pretty comfortable for a hour or so but, as you say, not good on the back for longer flights. it's a bit like having a firm car seat which at first seems uncomfortable but works better on long drives.

There are several advantages going AA from LA to Hawaii.
1. You can use the AA Flagship lounge at LAX which is miles better than the US lounge at PHX.
2. The flight time is appreciably shorter from LAX than it is from PHX.
3. There are many more flights from LAX to various Hawaiian islands than from PHX so if something goes wrong you have more options, plus the return flights back to PHX on US tend to be overnight which are not nice. If in HNL I always fly back on AA270 which is a great flight for being on time as the plane overnights in HNL plus it is often early at LAX.
4. I have not flown US on this route yet but I have heard from many sources that the in flight service sucks, the food is worse than AA (which has got worse recently) the First seats are worse than AA First (although c-w-s seems to disagree).
5. Whenever I have priced up using US from AA.com for some reason the US flight option seemed to be more expensive.

I would go for AA, particularly if the moons align and it is a 767. Even in a 757 I would go AA, for the power and better overall service, and indeed many of the factors mentioned above by SI.

On the other hand, PHX is a vastly better place to transfer between flights. LAX has been digging up its runway and apron of T4 since I was a child (or so it seems) and the LAX gate handling - never its strong point - can be tiresome. Also AA's crews have a seniority system with knobs on it for HNL, whereas US crews don't have such an embedded set of crews, so you do get some that are not entirely cynical about life.

In other words for a one-off a strong recommendation for AA, on the proviso that it's not a First experience (I'd much rather go Club Europe, if the winds run against you it's 6 hours to get to HNL). If fate puts you on US, then so long as you understand the limitations on food, service, power, IFE, then it's still a valid option since the seat is no worse than AA's 757 and can be an improvement in some respects.

I'd also point out that if you're doing a Trans Atlantic, a Trans Continental and a part Trans Pacific in one day you need to be quite a good flyer to cope with it all! I have had practice on this over the years, but it's still quite knackering. One trip last year I had bad turbulence on all 3 sectors and I did feel I had been thoroughly through the wringer by the time I got to Waikiki!
