Some interesting J fares from some US airports to some European destinations have appeared yesterday evening and today in response to some SkyTeam 'war' fares (there are a few mentions in the GDPF thread).

Prices below $2,000 in some cases. Lots below $2,500. Availability variable but extends as far as summer 2015. SkyTeam hubs in Europe seem to be the main destinations (people are mentioning FCO, BCN, MAD); starting points appear to be some (not all?) US airports with strong OW presence. AA, BA and US metal, wide range of routings.

(I just booked a trip from Texas including AMS and PAR for June/July -- for less than the WTP fare I was looking at a couple of days ago. Under $6/TP takes this close to TP run territory these days!)

Very probably not available for long.

Sometimes SEA-PHX-ATL is available as one flight number on US, which is also credited as a 2000+ miles flight and usually very competitively priced.

Good point. SEA:: F /alliance oneworld to ATL shows a US direct flight via PHX. Also with an AA code share but can't think of a good reason to do that.

BA don't codeshare with CX on the BKK-SIN or SIN-HKG routes, so these flights don't appear if you try to book on ba.com

Thanks
You can book on the telephone to BA, in person at a BA ticketing desk next time you have a few minutes at LHR, on an online travel agent website, or offline at a brick-and-mortal travel agent. Have a print out of your desired route and fare components ready to read to the travel agent, they love it when you've done all the leg work for them.

BA.com only shows a very small subset of the flight options you can purchase on BA ticket stock.

current US "fare wars" giving some great fares.

Westcoast to Europe for as low as £1,132

LAS - FCO - SEA @ £1,186
LAX - AMS rtn @ £1,132
LAX - FCO rtn @ £1,197

all July 2015 randomly input into matrix as a 1 night trip.

struggled to built in e.g. MIA, JFK or LCY but have only had a very quick play with matrix so may well be possible (or paging Calchas for fare rules (in English please ;-) ).

plenty other routings and dates.

EDIT: though not overly comfortable, if taking US for LAX - AMS, it should come in at 700 TPs for £1,137:

Jun 27
US 700 LAX 6:30AM PHL 2:32PM 5h 2m Airbus A321 First (A)
Layover in PHL 4h 8m
US 798 PHL 6:40PM AMS 8:40AM 8h 0m Boeing 757 Business (Z)

Jun 29
AY 4124 AMS 10:40AM PHL 1:25PM 8h 45m Boeing 757 Business (I)
Layover in PHL 2h 40m
US 783 PHL 4:05PM LAX 7:11PM 6h 6m Airbus A321 First (A)

I can't seem to find any of the above in bookable form anywhere. Guidance would be much appreciated.

I checked them out on matrix and found them bookable on AA.com.

Discussion in the premium fares thread on mileage runs suggests the OW fares (which were matching skyteam fares) are dead / gone though someone posted that one or two still live...

no, they didn't.

I've always been intrigued by such 'fare wars' and this is the first time I've seen them 'live' (and on OW). full discussion is here: http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/milea...014-a-169.html

never quite understood how a 12 / 24 hour matching of another alliance's pricing is really going to achieve much (especially when the other alliance is keeping such fares alive for much longer (skyteam fares seem still there) but hey, ho.

Pretty much as Calchas says. I first called our corporate TA (even though this is purely personal travel) to ensure that the fare does not jump up with the stopovers. Once I had my dates and exact flights, I called BA to book. For a moment, I got worried when the agent said "Ooh, Cathay Pacific, can you hold for a minute?" At the end, the booking went quickly and no phone fee charged.

000's question includes an interesting point: "...so these CX flights don't appear if you try to book on ba.com". In fact, they might appear but cannot be booked on ba.com (with stopovers).

Bookings or any complexity (such as stopovers or deliberately long layovers) need the Multi-city option. However, ba.com does not accept CX flights (non-codeshare) in Multi-city.

Had I initially looked at AMS-HKG routings, I would never had thought of the idea of including CX and stopovers: the number of daily AMS-LON connections is so big that the possible combinations of AMS-LON and LHR-HKG quickly fill the space that ba.com wants to display. Neither does Matrix show the CX options. Fortunately, I started with BSL-HKG. With just three daily BSL-LHR flights, there was enough space for ba.com to then include the more exotic via-SIN, via-PVG etc options, available for the same price

Also note that BA codeshares on CX metal to Australia require you to be connecting to/from another BA flight, not stopping over. The codeshares are unavailable otherwise. This is for legal reasons. It may be the same for connections to other destinations.

Thanks for following up with examples of great US-EUR-US fares in yesterday's 'war' (skirmish?), chris1979. I was too busy taking care of my own booking to carry out more research for the greater good. Let's hope one or two people here were able to benefit despite the short window of opportunity.

I've seen them going on before but never including combinations of origins, destinations and dates that made sense for me. You have to be in a position to commit quickly. Fortunately, Mrs IMH and I had had our "June/July 2015" conversation this past weekend: "We can fly out on XX or YY June, visit Mark and Cleo, then the conference in Amsterdam, then my parents and a couple of days in London or Paris". With that agreed I was on the lookout for award availability and/or decent fares -- and ready to pounce yesterday.

I don't pretend to understand the tactics or strategy either. But in this particular case I was very tempted by the SkyTeam fares and would probably have caved today and booked the trip with some unholy mix of AF, DL and KL if OW hadn't matched. As it is, the OW reservation has taken our projected TP totals for 2014-2015 to 1250 and 1350 -- and we all know what that's going to mean.

I was also sort of thinking "should I, shouldn't I". Problem is that it would need me to position to e.g. LAX for the £1,132 LAX - AMS fare and whilst that could be a fun nestled run etc, it was too much for the to think about at that time of night.

It also wasn't quite in the IB PAR category of £900 for 700 TPs TO westcoast (rather than FROM). If I see another one of those, I'll jump at it.
