There's been lots of discussion of and criticism of this at the AA board, along with some defending the fact that the inferior, non-flat AA seat does allow the airline to squeeze more of them into J, which in turn makes room for more upgrades, which in turn presumably translates into greater customer loyalty. So there is a method to the madness, whether we agree with it or not.

FWIW, the seats reportedly are designed so that they can go flat if there is more room between them. Whether AA will make that switch and whether the tighter partnership with BA will feed into that calculation, remains to be seen.
