Inflight phones - still in use? If so did anyone use them?

On my recent flight (777) I was looking at the inflight phone which is built into the handset. For the duration of the flight the display read "Phone service unavailable"

I couldn't find any reference to the phone in the Highlife magazine. I remember there used to be a paragraph or two about its use, as well as the rates, which IIRC were USD 5 per minute.

Has BA pulled the plug on this service?

Did anyone actually use the service? - I was tempted to give it a go for a couple of minutes mainly due to the "Hi honey - I''m on the plane!" novelty value

AVOD was unavailable?

Not on BA, but I've used these on QF. Our A380 MEL flight was delayed out of LAX and diverted to SYD due to crew hour limits. Phoned SWMBO to get her to act out her PA role. ^

I tried to use one a few years ago to make an urgent call but it didn't work.

I don't know if they'd already been taken out of service or if it just wasn't working.

I used them a free times to call my Dad from First, purely for novelty value. They were bloody expensive and the quality was rubbish, but it was still kinda cool

They always seemed not to work on LHR-East Coast routes for some reason, but used to work on longer-haul ones from LHR IIRC. Last time I used one must have been at least 10 years ago, though. Terrible reception and amazingly expensive so just for novelty value.

I have used them and I didn't think the call quality was that bad. Even the prices weren't shocking compared to some international roaming charges.

VS used to have a quite cool feature which allowed you to call other seats free of charge.

In all my years of travel I've used them once, when Mrs BBA and I were travelling different routes to the same final destination, and I was trying to ascertain whether she had made her flight. This was many years ago.

Oh no! It's the heavy breather in 72A again!

QF also had an air to ground SMS feature. I once had a J to F upgrade because this feature was not working at my J seat

I have used them once on a Shuttle - there was a little advert on the breakfast tray offering 2 minutes free. So we made a call very carefully under 2 minutes, just for the "we're phoning from a plane!" excitement

Although you can send texts to other seats now.

Calling is so 1986.
