Finally open skies

https://www.nytimes.com/2018/01/25/t...e=sectionfront

based on the attached article, I’m hopeful that the open skies agreement that I thought was coming into effect in 2015 will finally arrive. Given the capacity constraints at GRU do people think this will actually result in more flights between the US and Brazil, especially nonstop SFO-GRU. My views about tourism to Brazil are that the infrastructure is deficient to a very high degree and the value for money just isn’t there, although I love it and keep returning year after year.

I can’t speculate about GRU but GIG has capacity to spare and then some in its new terminal which is very nice. Given that most tourists would prefer to fly direct to Rio I think that would be the biggest benefactor of open skies. I wouldn’t be surprised to see a lot of northeastern airports get brand new service of routes to the US. The new super efficient 737 max with its small capacity and long range can really make once unthinkable routes profitable just like the 787. Think natal to New Orleans or something crazy like that. At any rate, combined with the new visa program, I think Brazil really headed in the right direction tourism-wise. Safety obviously still a major concern...

Flew threw NAT last year, and after the world cup was over, that place is a ghost town. I imagine a lot of the new facilties are the same.

Since US Airways withdrew from Brazil, frequencies have been up for grabs.

Even though I think open skies will be a very positive development, it will mean nothing on day 1 besides the possibility of JBAs, since frequencies are vastly available to all destinations, including GRU.
