it just got better, JFK-GIG opened up on the 10th, so was able to change to the non-stop (get $2.50 refunded) and no need to take half a day off from work! 9:30 PM departure, 8:35 AM arrival... Flagship access and then a nice MCE seat to sleep down to Rio!

Nice!!

Massive Award Opening on AA.com and Azul intra-Brazil Flights, too

Go to AA.com and check it out. There is a lot of availability in coach from NYC, CLT, PHL, MIA, DFW, and LAX to both GRU and GIG. Also plenty of availability on Azul inside Brazil searchable and bookable on United. Screenshots and more info in my blog.

Can someone recommend where to stay in Fortaleza and Manaus during World Cup? Hotel prices are ridiculously high.

It's World Cup. Only logical that prices are ridiculously high, same theory of supply and demand that prevails at Carnaval and Reveillon in popular destinations in Brazil, only more so.
Also realize that only a small fraction of properties may even have an online presence, let alone a site in English.
Try www.aluguetemporada.com.br to rent a furnished apartment, or AirBnB to rent a room or apartment, or a youth hostel bunk bed.

I have hotel rooms reserved on days of games in Manaus in Holiday Inn. If you are interested, PM me. Normal prices.

If you are staying with relatives who live near the airport, they might know best how to advise you on multiple bus routes.
If you mean that you and your family will be in a hotel.......
The international airport is roughly to the north of the city, about an hour under best conditions. The stadium us about 18 km to the east.
There is a shuttle bus from the airport into the area of the city where you can access the metro. The stadium is on Line 3 , Corinthians stop.
Otherwise, taxi. Afaik.
