Need a return ticket to enter Brazil?

I'll be flying into Sao Paulo for the first time in early February on a Temporary Visa IV (graduate student). I'll likely be flying in on AA or Continental, and I don't have plans yet on returning to the US.

The Brazilian Consulate in Chicago accepted a notarized statement saying I wouldn't overstay my visa, since I didn't have plane tickets to show them. Will there be issues with the airline not allowing me on the plane, as I hear happens when entering some South American countries?

Also, if anyone has suggestions on how to book a round trip flight to Sao Paulo from the US, with the return leg very flexible so I can return when I want, I'm all ears!

Thanks!

Don't know about the airlines, but at passport control they never want to see your return tickets unless there is something wrong or suspicios with your papers (happened with me when I had overstayed and had to pay a fine at the next entry).
Anyway, how do you plan to return? One ways are normally the same price as a discount return ticket.
