Blackout Dates?
I'm trying to book a *A Award in Business or First from JNB to FRA and onwards to EDI for early January 2004. I know this is a very busy time an availability is likely to be restricted but bmi are telling me that LH do not just restrict availability at this this time but have a complete blackout even for *A Gold.
Can anyone confirm whether this is the case?

Blackout dates and availability are not the same:
Blackout dates: Dates when no burning of miles is allowed.
Availability: award tickets in Business class are issued in booking class "I" for M&M.
LH/M&M has no blackout dates. I don't know about bmi. bmi might have blackout dates for LH flights. You can only find out from bmi.
Availability: It Is possible for M&M members with enough points to check availability for business class award tickets. But that doesn't mean that you can get an award ticket with bmi miles if 'I' shows availability. (I think 'I' is M&M stock but no Star stock - but I'm not 100% sure)

It would be interesting to know if different booking class were used for *A awards and M&M awards.

"bmi are telling me that LH do not just restrict availability at this this time but have a complete blackout even for *A Gold. "
Obviously some seats are available to LH Miles and More members.
I would try the dates posted on the LH forum (5, 7 and 8 of January JNB-MUC-FRA) and see if you get a positive. It is a busy time of year and they may have very few reward seats for this route. Going via Munich will help since that is a fairly new route that people are largely unaware of.
