-They orginally had me in a Grand Marquis and offered to switch me into either a Town Car, Lucerne, or Avalon. Since I had not driven the Avalon yet, I took that one. Minus the "Maintence Required" light on I really like the car.
-The manager said they were tapped out of Caddy's that night. Which from a glance around the lot, looked abour right. I did find out that one reason, at least his location, was out of Caddy's was Avis was not buying as many anymore because of cost. He stated that GM raised the price on Avis by about 25%. This makes sense why it seems harder and harder to get the infamous DTS.
Lets say your midsize rate is 33 a day. If you offered 7 dollars a day for a DTS, youll probably get it. It helps to know that for each dollar per day upgrade they get, their comission increases. So when you make a small token gesture, even as small as 2 or 3 bucks for the next class up, often you get more than you expect.
So there are benefits to getting raped by booking last second. And if your rate is "full size, 45-55 a day", in my opinion the location is swimming in upgradeable Luxury cars, you should be getting one. But then again, I am a maverick
I agree. My company only allows us to rent intermidiates but I always opt for a full size because the price difference per day is usually only about $1-3.

I don't know what category the HHR is, but I was offered a Stratus, the HHR and a 3rd choice I didn't hear. I'd been curious about the HHR. This one has 15K and like most of the cars at my local station, multitudes of previous renters must have fumbled with a cigarette while sloshing their coffee around. There's ash in/on everything and the light grey upholstery has taken it in the shorts.
I kind of like the HHR but the interior appointments are spartan yet confusing. It rides nicely and quietly. It's a little dark inside but that's offset by all the interior lights that I can't figure how to turn off. It compares favorably to the PT Cruiser which I do not like one bit.
BTW, I looked over the lady's shoulder as she was setting me up. The screen clearly shows me as an Avis First and Upgrade is also on the page. There would be no excuse for ignorance.

The HHR is an intermediate. I'm hoping Avis doesn't get any more of them. The blind spots seem to be larger than in most vehicles and it's a wagon which leaves all your valuables in plain sight.

--Originally got a Town Car (apparently, they're phasing out the DTS)... so I switched it out for a brand new charcoal gray Avalon sitting right next to the booth, just to try it out. Much more responsive ride... quite enjoyed it.

I had a feeling it wasn't an upgrade based on how full the lot was.

Just happy to get a vehicle within 20 miles of 'dega on a race weekend.
I asked the manager why Avis.com honored my reservation when he was out of cars and he said it ignores what time they're due back. I got someone elses van today.

FULLY Equipped!
Navigation, Voice Command, THX Sound, DVD, Satellite Radio, heated/cooled seats.... Don't know if they all have this, but when you open the door, the running boards come out, power hatch, power folding rear row seats, Tri-zone climate control, etc. etc.......
It was a real treat (except at the fuel pump!!!! )

Man, was that fun. I have to say, MCI is quite possibly the best location I've been to. The Line Manager met me and walked me to my car (a DTS). I wanted something different, so we walked the lot a bit and she offered me ANYTHING I wanted, even the H3. I settled on the Crossfire, and boy was I happy. Great ride, handled terrifically. They need more Crossfires at the other stations.
