Avis JNU Experiences
Thought I'd share some experiences with the JNU location for anyone curious about their operations/experience.
First, JNU is a small and compact terminal. The rental car desks for Avis, Budget, Hertz, and Enterprise/Alamo are all in the baggage claim area and there is a small parking lot for rental cars directly outside.
Due to my travel schedule, I needed to do two one-day rentals. I have President's Club status.
First Rental (Full-Size). My SEA-JNU flight was delayed and arrived around 11 pm (an hour past their published closing time). I was pleasantly surprised to see an agent manning the booth (the other rental agency desks were all dark); she said she stayed late for the few reservations on my flight. I was given a 2018 Toyota Camry XLE with 43,000 miles on the odometer. Despite the age, the car was in decent shape.
Second Rental (Mid-Size SUV). I arrived to JNU around 11am for my scheduled reservation and the desk was unstaffed. I called the local number and it just rang on the desk. On the counter, found a small sign directing customers to dial a different number, which I did. it rang once and then went to voice mail; I sent a follow-up text message and an agent immediately showed up. I got the sense that she was taking a break outside in the lot. In any case, I was given a 2021 Toyota RAV4 LE AWD with 38,500 miles on the odometer.
Important to note that I was using my company's corporate rate for both rentals and I was asked to show ID.
Returns are done by parking the car in the rental lot, noting the mileage and gas on the folio, and going back to the desk. For the second rental, I was retuning at 0530 so dropped the folio jacket and keys in the return box on the counter and received a close out email around 0800 when the desk processed the return.
The great thing about the return lot is that it is currently free to park if you have a rental car hang tag (they had just re-paved it; I saw a small island where a swing arm gate could be installed). So, I left the Camry in that lot for about an hour while I waited to meet up for some people arriving. It's also very close to the airline check-in counters so it was very convenient to off-load my luggage and cart it into the terminal.
I didn't receive any benefits from my status, but I give the station extra points for staying open late and having a pretty convenient operation.
