unauthorized return location fee

hey all,

was wondering if anyone has been charged an 'unauthorized return location fee' from a AVIS/Budget rental and what it costed one.

Thanks!

If you call ahead it might not be a lot but if you just show up then It's anywhere from $50 to $350 depeding on distance from the original drop off location.

Charlotte to Columbia, had a return trip planned but called to see what the drop charge would be and it was $300. Obviously I decided against the one way rental and just returned as normal.

It varies on class of vehicle, location and inventory levels (on both sides of the equation).

Well that's better than the one way fee of $600 to go to New York from Miami 🤔

Data point: Picked up a car in Amarillo, plans changed, had to return it in Wichita. Was told the drop fee would be $1,000. Haven’t seen the final bill yet. I’m told this is because the Amarillo TX location is an independent Budget franchise, so their cars don’t “float” through the system.

The one-way you mentioned seems not possible to book online with Avis/Budget. However, the reverse one-way, ICT to Amarillo, is available, and at surprisingly decent prices.

Yep, we couldn’t book a one-way...wasn’t an option. Final invoice just came in from them for $1,376, just for the return fee. I bet the cheap ICT-AMA rate you’re seeing is so they can get their vehicle back.

It was good rates for almost all car sizes, so probably not just related to yours.

Except things like that are always seasonal. If you book at the appropriate time, you might pay $60 for the whole WEEK.

Possible. We rented a minivan, so perhaps a renter would be upgraded into the van for that one-way price, from a lower tier.
