Recently used this, but it seemed there were some issues and they were directing most arriving passengers to the manned booths.

Are children allowed to use the e-gates (ages 3 and 6)? How crowded do you think immigration would be if we're arriving around 1 am that it would be beneficial to use the e-gates?

People with young children were directed to the group section (which is different to the standard manual clearance)

Thanks, should we still do the e-visa then beforehand?

Yes. The visa on arrival is a separate queue to immigration. Not doing it before hand means you have to queue twice - once for the visa on arrival and then again for the immigration.

E-visa is just more convenient.

The problem with that process is that it completely defeats the purpose of the e-gates. If you have to queue up once to use the e-gates and then queue up again after that to deal with an officer for a stamp, it's actually MORE cumbersome than before the e-gates came onstream.

It's similar to the self-defeating process we have for arrivals in Canada. We have to queue up and make our customs declarations at a bank of terminals, then queue up again to see an officer, where we're asked the very same questions we just answered on the machine. At least under the old system we only had to queue up once.
