Hoi An Hotel Recommendations?
Anyone have any recommendations for where to stay in Hoi An? I prefer to be walking distance from the Old or French Quarters, prefer nice hotels but not either of the two that are over $600 a night while I'm there. Presently have a reservation at La Residencia Hoi An Luxury Boutique Hotel, which has great reviews on TA, but can cancel without penalty.
Thank you in advance for any advice.

La Residencia is about $60 per night and looks pretty good. I don't think you need to be looking for something that costs 10 times as much.

Hoi An is another place like Siem Reap in that there are dozens of nice inexpensive guest houses where one can stay that are stylish and well run. Typical prices are on the order of $35-80 a night , or about double what they go for in Siem Reap.
One difference is that, over the past 5-10 years, there have been several very high end luxury resorts that have been developed along the beach around Hoi An, and that's where you see these several hundred dollar a night room rates. But these places are essentially self-contained enclaves, and you basically are segregating yourself from the character of Hoi An if you stay at one of these. I personally would recommend one of the first type of places.
A few years ago, I was booked into one of these places by Buffalo Tours, and I can't remember the name of it, but it was something on the order of $45 a night with about a dozen or fifteen rooms, and the street it was on was lined with similar establishments, any one of which looked like it would have been an equally decent choice. There are dozens of these type of places on Agoda.
La Residencia is one of these, although bigger than most, and it's around $50-60 a night on Agoda, and seems to get really excellent reviews. It sounds like it would be just fine if it's located near where you want to be in Hoi An.

Regarding La Residencia, stayed there in January and it was fine and can't dispute the accuracy of the Trip Advisor reviews.
It seemed like the staff had been told to upsell us at every opportunity which was a surprise. Everywhere else we'd stayed in Vietnam there was none of this, at least in a pushy way, but then again Hoi An was the most touristy place we visited. It's a shame that my lasting memory of the hotel is that it felt like collecting a car from a rental company (where at least one is prepared to say 'no thanks' to the 20 upsell questions).

As was mentioned in my first post, I already did that, but I trust FT posters a little more.
