Smile Derawan - Indonesia

Hi there,

My Wife and I are thinking of going to Derawan in Indonesia while we are touring Borneo. We were planning on Sipadan but the current FCO guidance is to avoid. So looking through Lonely planet got me thinking...

Is it worth the traveling time?
Coming from Borneo will involve two planes and a very long speed boat journey (3hrs)

There are cheaper ways to get there but this is the shortest journey.

Will 4 days be enough?
Time constraints mean we will arrive at around 5pm and only get 3 full days diving in...

Is there any other dive location I have missed?

Cheers guys.

FCO's a bit out of date, I suspect. The warnings date from the Abu Sayyaf kidnapping incident in 2009, but a) Sipadan's been patrolled by Malaysia since it was awarded to them in 2002 by the ICJ; b) Abu Sayyaf hasn't done anything even within the Phils in three years, and c) the .... just signed a peace agreement with the PI government in January.
