EZE problems 1/10/08
there is a new thread
http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/showthread.php?t=777433
which indicates airport "chaos" and some cancelled flights today due to AR baggage handlers strike.. If flying today you might want to contact airline before heading out to airport.

yes... this is being reported as this is posted.... I hope this gets sorted out soon, although non AR flights should be better off and probably not too inconvenienced.

TV reports coming in of more trouble at Ezeiza today - not sure if it's a follow on from yesterday but it looks chaotic.
It does look as if it is only AR flights affected.

Any Impact at AEP?
AR canceled all departures from EZE today (Jan 11):

BTW, two days ago, I was able to use AR's Argentina website to re-confirm my domestic flight by completing filling in a form on the web site with my flight details, and waiting for an e-mail reply 24 hours later. Oddly enough, one cannot do this on the USA version of AR's website (where I bought the ticket) because the form only allows a choice of MIA or JFK as departure cities (not AEP).
I type this in MX's lounge at MEX waiting for my departure to EZE in two hours.

Check on http://www.aa2000.com.ar/index.php (select AEP from the drop-down menu on the upper left), for your exact flight.
There are AU(Austral)/AR flights scheduled to depart AEP (Jan 12) all day. But things could change overnight ... What is your final destination?

Apparently, the PASSENGERS rioted at EZE after the Aerolineas employees walked off their jobs.
Even by Argentine standards, that's a bit unusual.

Things in EZE today remained tense, although slowly flights are starting to depart and AR announced that operations should return to normal (?) by Tuesday.

Returning from EZE January 12 with wife and kids. EZE was a madhouse, and we elected to take the bump and fly a day later.(Our DL flight, as we learned later, ultimately departed about 3 1/4 hours late) Our children were compelled by work obligations to fly 1/12 and report standing in lines for 7 hours amid thousands of angry passengers who threatened and occasionally attacked immigration personnel and others. ALL flights--not just AR--were affected by these conditions.
When we left the following night all was nearly back to normal, in part because a considerable number of Argentinan police in riot gear were lined up shoulder to shoulder near security screening.

Anyone travelling to Argentina has to recognize that these types of "problems" happen with some regularity. I know I previously was caught up in an Argentine airline strike. If you absolutely have to be home by a certain date, I'd give myself a couple days of buffer time.
I considered my November trip to Argentina a success because I only ran into one strike.
I was driving around Patagonia, and the oil company workers went on strike for a few days. So no gas in Patagonia! Of course, nobody warned me -- I found out when I tried pulling up to the closed pumps.
I don't think these troubles should dissuade most folks from visiting Argentina. It's got great culture, scenery and food, and is a terrific value. But folks who can't roll with the "unscheduled" and "unpredictable" should probably vacation elsewhere.

One of my favorite quotes about the AR situation last weekend at EZE was from a Venezuelan woman that appeared in La Nacin:
"The Kirchners are ungrateful. Chvez sent them a suitcase full of dollars, and instead of treating the Venezuelans well, they treat us as if we were dogs."

How concerned should I be about these events impacting the following flights next week on Aerolineas Argentinas?
1/22 GIG to EZE...should I rebook to TAM just to be sure I make it to BA?
1/24-1/25 AEP to IGU to AEP...as these are domestic flights is there less risk of cancellation?
Many thanks for your input.
