Because of old and silly laws dating from Prohibition, wine retailing is really screwy here, with all kinds of senseless restrictions.
Thanks for the info.... some follow up questions:

Can you purchase wine online through Specs and have it shipped inside the Great State of Texas..???

What about buying through Specs and shipping out of state... is this possible..??

Thanks,

It might be best to go to the source:

http://www.specsonline.com/

Keep in mind that this is a horrible time to ship in the N. Hemisphere, esp in Texas -- it's almost 40C or more every day. Which is why we spend a month in Bs As in Aug/Sept!

specs has about 300 argentine wines listed with prices. they are a long way from dallas.

majestic in dallas has 341 listed, no prices. they have at least one very high end store in highland park. do not recall ever seeing $200-1000 bottles on racks before.

goodygoody.com in dallas has over 200 listed with prices. they seem to be about 20% higher than specs.

texas is unique in that at least in dallas, they do not have a three tier system. many of the retail stores have a wholesale division.

you can go on line and check prices yourself. i buy little in dallas. i usually check one 50 lb luggage, which is 11 bottles of wine.

We need a wine shop like Majestic or Specs here in Minneapolis. Surdyk's is a nice place to go but they have very little South American wine, even though I'm sure we could ask to order some.

One other place I've found helpful when looking for wine is www.wine-searcher.com. They can offer a listing of places that carry a wine and vinage you're looking for and seem to have a pretty good listing of Argentine wines (although you get a limited list if you're not a subscriber).

For a stingy like me "amazing" depends on what the price is.

Tonight I opened a bottle of Pecado Malbec from Finca Quara.....amazing price at ARG$7.90 a bottle. I've been charged more for a rough drop of wine.

Remember the guys making this Wine are the same folks that bring you Sassicaia.... so, sadly, this means that such pedigree will not be pro-bono...

I was in the wine shop the other day looking for cheap everyday plonk when my wife grabbed a 12 peso bottle and said this'll do - on closer inspection by me the price was actually 120 pesos. It was returned to the shelf quicker than it came off.
Perhaps it might be better that you don't tell me the price as the chances of me buying it are zilch anyway. If I pay anything over 15 pesos I think I'm being extravagant.

No worries..... plenty of decent wine in the AR$10-15 range, and there's nothing wrong with enjoying those. I think that wine is all about enjoyment... and its a "habit" that has to grow on people slowly and at each persons own pace. Many folks simply dont have wine as a habit and it doesnt grow on them.... and thats perfectly fine.

You and I need to talk Single Malts when we meet....
