I believe that Jousten is best value in BsAs. In fact, I'll be staying at NH City and NH Jousten next week.

Welcome to FT. Indeed, the esteemed Alejandro (Gaucho100K) has provided a great thread of real benefit for us on FT. Since I have no association, you can check out the following... www.terroir.com.ar

I am traveling to Buenos Aires tomorrow, taking my 25 year old daughter on this particular journey. She wants to take an Estancia visit next week on a day that I have another appointment, so the following Day Tour Company was recommended... http://www.tangol.com/ENG/buenos_aires.asp
I have never used that company before, but they were recommended to my spouse by a friend. Tangol's offices are at Florida 971.Shop #59, First Floor, Buenos Aires (1005).

If my daughter follows through and uses Tangol, I'll report her experience with them on this thread either from BA next week or in early April.

Bed & Breakfast in BA

Hello:

Thanks for the amazing thread! I will be traveling to Argentina shortly (April 6 :) )and am really interested in a B&B stay in Buenos Aires. Any experiences or recommendations to pass on?

Could somebody share alittle information on the bus from Buenos Aires to the falls in Iguazu, I realize it's a long ride, but from what I gathered, on a pretty comfortable bus. Would it be possible (or recommended) to take the trip, spend a day, or 1/2 day seeing the falls, and then returning to B.A.? I only have a short first visit planned, and would like to "cram" as much in as possible. I'm ready to book the hotel, but if we're spending two nights on a bus, it kind of changes the plans. Thanks all, I've already gotten about six pages of notes from this thread.

Taking the bus to Iguazu is very doable, and yes it will be comfortable. My only second thought is that if you are short on time, then the investment in riding the bus will kind of make little sense. Im also not sure that 1/2 day will be enough to do the entire sightseeing tour.

I'm also heading to BsA in two weeks - thank you for this thread once again.

I have a few questions that may be answered elsewhere, but without a search function I just can't find them. :(

Does anyone particularly recommend:

Any specific company for a basic guided tour when I get there? I'd like to take one just to orient myself and get a broad overview of the city.

A place to see non-Vegas Tango? I enjoyed Tango Argentino, et al, but I'd like to see less for export.

Is there also a website for finding out what's playing at various theaters?

Thanks for any help and apologies if this has been asked and answered repeatedly.

It's better just to rent an apartment for your stay. 2 weeks ago I was in a 1 bedroom apartment in Retiro for $225 a week. This is an inflated tourist price but it was well worth it.

I have bookmarked this, covers city tour and Tango, however, have not used them

I have seen a Tango show at Cafe Tortoni, would not recommend it, but visit Cafe Tortoni for a drink ...

Gaucho100K:

You expressed it in a diplomatic way, I have to say 1/2 day is not enough!
We spent 2 nights there and had Itaipu, Brazil falls and Argentina falls in one day ... from early morning until dawn ... our guide had never done this (in one day) before!

BTW, I have talked to an American couple on a plane. They had done Africa in three (3) days: Cape Town, Kenia/Tanzania (safari) & Cairo :D

Hotel availability

Hello. My wife and I will be visiting BA next Feb (2006) but when I look on line at Expedia for hotel reservations ,every hotel says " No rooms available for your dates"
Now, is there something going on in BA I'm not aware of, or is it just too far in advance to be making reservations?
It's not just a few properties that say unavailable, it's every place ,big and small alike. It's confusing as it makes BA look like it's completely booked up!
Thanks for any answers,Tattikat2

When planning for two recent visits to Buenos Aires, I've found online reservations systems to be rather....shall we say....inconsistent....for the city. This includes trying to make online reservations with international chain hotels. I've had much better luck simply emailing a property and handling it all that way.

Checked Expedia.
On Expedia.com all dates from February 21, 2006 are crossed out, can't be booked, also March 2006 can't be booked.

Next, I believe Expedia is too expensive for Buenos Aires.

I booked direct with the hotel.

daytrip

hey folks,
as my trip gets closer and closer, i still read all sorts of conflicting information on day-trips. perhaps some of you experienced travelers to BA might have some input on just a one day trip without overnight?

El tigre....Colonia...San Juan de Areco.....or Mar de Plata?

All opinions welcome!
Thanks!

I went to El Tigre. By train from the big station near Retiro(?). Train was old, we passed through nice areas, I guess where Gaucho100K lives ;) . Then we changed the train .. nice private, A/C train. Then we walked to the river and took a boat for some hours. This day-trip was pretty interesting, we could see many of the "datschas" at the river delta.

For Colonia, read the thread BA to Montevideo. flyme2 gives some valuable information. BTW, I think the Buquebus site is down!?
