I thought it was super. Which restaurants (of its type) are you comparing it to and why do you find them better? (Just planning ahead for my next trip in April!)

opinion please

I'm headed to Bs.As. next week. Received the following recommendations from the hotel concierge, and I'd like some thoughts from friends on the board:

Restaurants- La Cabana and Casacruz

Tango Shows- el Querandi and Esquina Carlos Gardel

thanks

Perhaps the best entertainment deal I've ever seen! The show was quite entertaining, and no reason to pay more.......

Can anyone tell me more about the discount ticket outlet? Is it the only one? Is it easy to find? It seems a good source to buy the tango tickets, and I thought possibly tickets for the gaucho excursion. Thanks :)

I have been reading a LOT for our upcoming trip. I've read that Esquina Carlos Gardel and Senor Tango are the best and most popular tango shows. I have read that Senor Tango is along the lines of a touristy Vegas show, encompassing a lot of things besides tango. I am going to try Esquina Carlos Gardel.

If I have the descriptions wrong -- someone please jump in ;)

Outdoor weekend markets

I have read about the San Telmo market on Sundays. What hours on Sunday?

I also saw mention a crafts fair in front of the Recoleta cemetary on weekends. What hours typically?

Thanks :)

I was just in BA last week for a week. 2nd time in 3 months that I was down there. Looking to go back again as soon as I can. Just love the place.

This time I hit Senor Tango with a lady friend. Both of us are in are mid twenties and enjoyed it a lot. It was definitely pricey in terms of BA standards. 320 pesos for 2 for dinner and show not including tip. 3 choices for entre for dinner. I selected steak as always. Had red wine (something that started with uxml or something) that was the worst wine I tasted in BA. No body, very dry near bitterness, and no texture. The steak was pretty blah as well. For a 60 pesos dinner, it was waaaaay below par.

I did not expect to be seated with 3 other couples at a table. Was hoping for a 2 person table but a place like this, I guess that could not be done. On the otherhand, we had a great seat infront of center stage/band on the first floor.

It is very touristy. I'd say 90% of the guests left in tour buses. Photos will cost you 30 pesos. They give 3-1 exchange rate if you op to pay in dollars. Airport gave me 2.93 on the day I arrived.

Restaurants that I went to this time:

Te Mataré Ramirez - www.tematareramirez.com

Interesting place. Aphrodisasic is what the website calls this place. Live music on Thursday night. Female singer with a piano and bass player. I only recognized Nora Jones but sang music of that sort. Two locations, we went to the one in Palermo. It's pretty small. The food was OK, it's a place that couples would go to. Had a chadon champagne for 40 pesos. 2 champagne cocktails for 12 pesos each I believe. Appetizer (some kind of smoked salmon), steak for entre, she had some kind of japanese dish, and 2 ice creams for desert. Damage was 120 pesos w/o tip. Bill came with a primo codom wrapped in a restaurant card.

Asia de Cuba @ Puerto Madero

I would not recommend this place. Food was decent but I've had much better food in BA for a lot less money. I guess this was to be expected. Pretty hostess and waitresses though.

Had the Oriental Delight -- a mix of sushi, maki, and some rolls -- for appetizer for 2.

Had the steak which was horrible. She had some kind of soup dish.

A bottle of red wine that I could not remember the name. Cost was about 140 pesos w/o tip. Photo cost 15 pesos. (A bottle of Dom will cost 1200 pesos).

Montana @ Recoleta

Had a late dinner here (midnight) on Tuesday I believe. Steak was decent. She managed to convince me to eat this molleja (sp?) dish. Turned out to be cow gizzards. Was not bad tasting actually but could not eat more after I knew. Steak was decent, cost reasonable in this area.

Cabello @ Recoleta (I can't remember the name, it's right next to McDonalds in Recoleta next to the cemetary)

Had Bife Mariposa for late lunch. Sausages, 4x beers, etc. 70 pesos for 2 w/o tip.

Al Shark @ Palermo

Arabian food with live music and belly dancer. Older crowd here. One table our age, all others are 40+. Food was very bad. I've had arabe food before and it was very good but this place wasn't good. Cost 90 pesos for 2 including a bottle of white wine. Belly dancer was at least 35 but was pretty good. Took a photo of me stuffing a 2 peso bill in her costume. We left before the photos came back (2am).

The first trip I stayed in an apartment in Palermo and thought the food was much cheaper and much better. No one spoke english, no english menu, but my horrible spanish managed to get me though.

1st trip:

Mumbo in Palmero.

Drag Queen comedian that I could not understand a word. Had steak, cocktails, and wine. Cost for 4 was 200 pesos. The floor opened up to dancing after the show ended. Quite enthusiatic crowd. Slightly older crowd but 30% or so in the mid twenties. Strip tease, both male and female.

Buenos Aires News (No idea where this was, it was right beneath some train tracks)

Got shafted with the corner seat upstairs b/c some famous person was performing that night. Big place. Food was OK, not oustanding. Left before show ended.

Las Diosas (No idea where this was)

Average food. Lots of young people. Strip tease, both male and female. Same drag queen comedy. After midnight, they clear all the tables and turns into a great clubbing/dancing scene (80s music). In the backroom, there is a techno area with a bar.

Garbis @ Palermo

Some kind of buffet special that was pretty good. Had bife de lomo shish kababs that was amazing. Went back again on another night. The only restauarant in BA that I ever went back more than once. Place was cheap if I remember correctly. 80 peso for 2 tops.

Lola @ Recoleta

Expensive place. Had baked white salmon. Wine and deserts. 3 person cost 220 pesos for lunch. Have to admit the salmon was pretty good. All waiters spoke english. Looks like catered mainly to tourists. Nice atmosphere.

General thoughts:

January was a strange time to be visiting BA. It's the vacation month for locals so streets are very very empty. This could be good or bad depending on what you like to do. Discos are still closed. We tried a few on the weekends and they were still closed. I had a great time anyway but would look to return in fall/spring peak seasons.

Tigre is close by and reachable by train/taxi. Costa de la parque is about 1/4 the size of great adventure in NJ but cost only 20 pesos. It cost 95 centavos to take the train from tigre back to retiro. Talk about saving money. If you don't like roughing it, taxi will cost about 28 pesos from recoleta. Met a great scottish cab driver that has lived in BA for 45 years. Very kindly pointed out every single location on the drive to Tigre. Took down his number so I can find him again next time.

Lurker for some time. Hoping to contribute more in the future.

Food restrictions @ customs?

When arriving in B.A. what is 'not allowed'? I presume we will end up with some snacks/food in our carry ons. Wanted to be prepared to not bring anything that we would have to throw away upon arrival. Thanks

Iguazu flights

With so many FTs offering valuable information about BA, I feel somehow embarassed to ask questions instead of offering something myself.

I will be in EZE Apr. 1. It will be a brief stay, as this is only the first stop in a long trip. However, even though I've been to Iguazu several times (many years ago), I want to visit again, just for one day. I want to arrive, tour both sides, and come back next day.

As Aeroripoff is out of question with the gringo fares, I've checked Southern Winds and American Falcon, and neither one offers flights at a convenient time to me. American Falcon only flies 3 times a week and returns the same day. Southern Winds, against the usual, flies from Iguazu to BA and then returns, which for someone going for a day means a period of just 20 hours.

Are there any other airlines flying BA to Iguazu?

I will appreciate any information.

Thanks.

As you know, Aerolineas Argentinas provides service from BA's Jorge Newbery (AEP) airport to Cataratas (IGR), Iguazu (on the Argentine side of the Falls) 2 or 3 times a day in each direction... Sometimes you can get a special deal via a walk-in to a travel agent in BA for short visit tour packages.

From memory:

Fresh fruit and vegetables (and other parts of plants).
Dairy products.
Honey and other bee products.

Commercial unopened packaged foods are no problem. I routinely take candy bars, cookies, coffee, sushi rice, spices, etc ...
