Effect of Current Protests?

Is there anyone in BA now that can comment on if/how current protests re the agriculture export taxes are affecting travel? Some news reports are even saying that blocked roads are causing shortages of, gasp, beef?



Flying down for first trip tomorrow so any info is appreciated.

The situation probably won't have a big effect on you or other tourists. It is making life harder on those of us who live here. Inflation was already bad before the protests started 2 weeks ago, since then fresh food prices have skyrocketed. The president and protesters called a truce last night though, and shipments are supposed to have resumed today. However, our local mega-grocery store still had no beef and terrible looking produce this evening.

I suggest you come down and enjoy yourself, don't worry about the protests if they resume. However, you may find it interesting to see how political protest down here is much more vocal and frequent then what has happened in the US in the past 30 years:)

To follow up on Kurt's report, our supermarket continues to be out of beef, poultry and related items. Dairy products are still available in a somewhat normal fashion. Fresh vegetables have also been lacking.

My local supermarket (Best) in my neighborhood of Microcentro, was out of most beef, and a lot of the packaged sandwich meat and cheese a couple of days ago. I went to Belgrano yesterday, and stopped by a Carrefour ne Norte, and they had plenty of packaged beef, sandwich meat, vegetables, etc.

As posted in other threads, supply of foodstuffs is back to normal. Some prices have increased but thats been going on for a while now...

OK. Would love some FT guidance here for my October trip. Here's the skinny:

* 9 days in BA at Marriott Hotel
* my partner and I are total opposites (insert smile)
* I like to enjoy the city and think I won't be bored on day 5
* she feels we need to fly "somewhere" to have fun
* I have suggested that we base at Marriott (reward) and just do day/night trips to "places" outside of BA that may not be called "Mendoza, Iguazu, etc"

What kind of agenda would anyone schedule if they had 9 full days and they didn't fly to Iguaza, Mendoza, etc.?

No Mendoza or Iguazu???? That makes it tough :) Just kidding, BA is a rather large and cosmopolitian city that offers a wide variety of activities. In 9 days you can certainly enjoy a nice selection of some of the great places to dine, take in the MALBA (Museum of Latin American Art) Palermo Soho, San Telmo Fair on Sunday, La Recoleta Cemetery, and on and on....but as for side trips you can take the ferry across the Rio de la Plata to Colonia, Urg. makes for a nice day trip or an overnight. Or the Tren de la Costa to visit Tigre and the delta area. And there are many estancias and smaller towns in the province of Buenos Aires that are very nice. San Antonio de Areco is wonderful, and has some wonderful estancias such as El Ombú de Areco for an overnight.

All this smoke in the city from the wildfires is a serious bummer. My whole apartment smells of smoke, and when I was out earlier tonight, it made breathing difficult! It was fine during the day. I hope it clears up soon.

According to the local news this morning, the meteorological service is hoping that the winds will shift by this afternoon (Thursday). In my barrio, although Wednesday started with clear blue skies, by early evening there was chocking acrid smoke to the level that buildings a few blocks away were obscured. By nightfall you could see the smoke in the headlights of autos on the street.

It's still as bad this morning, having permeated the air inside as well. People are reporting asthmatic and allergic reactions. It's not helped by the low humidity (currently about 35% RH).

The fires in the delta (north of BsAs) have been burning out of control for several days now, but the situation has been much worse (as far as air quality in BsAs) in the last 18 hrs. Routes to the north of the city have been closed due to hazardous driving conditions (fog + smoke), and there have been a number of auto accidents with fatalities over the past couple of days.

In in Palermo and its been really bad since yesterday (Wed) at around noon.... when I left work yesterday in the evening it was like London fog... I hope this is all back to normal by the weekend.

At 7:00 am this morning, the conditions at AEP (Aeroparque) were:
Cloud cover 0%, unlimited ceiling, visibility 500 m ... :mad:
