First and probably only time in Argentina.
I just booked AA awards to EZE in October for my wife's birthday. F out and Y home.
We will be there from 19th to the 25th and I would like to make it a memorable trip. Does anyone have suggestions for reasonable priced accommodations? Ideally I'd like an apartment type room.
We both have dual UK/USA passports so I'm thinking we use UK on the way in to avoid tax and US on the way out as that's what the US government likes us to do.
Anything unmissable? not that fussy about taking Tango lessons I have to say. Being from the UK we like the cosy pub atmosphere for a night out. But living in Texas, I do like a good steak.
Obviously I'll be reading through as many post on the forum as I can over the next few months gleaning as much information as i can but any advice in he meantime would be much appreciated.
Oh, and neither of us speaks Spanish although we will be trying Rosetta Stone over the next few months.
thanks
Alex (g1ant - as in g1ant steaks!!)

Re passports. Show UK to argentine officials both entering and leaving Argentina Do not show them u.s. They will look for when you entered Argentina and that will be in the UK passport. The airline will also want to see it and you should also show them you u.s. Passport. Of course when you enter u.s. Show them u.s.passport

Hi g1ant - I won't go through listing restaurants or accommodation as although I live here (not in Bs As) there is already loads of good info to be found here posted by more knowledgeable people than me.
You won't need to worry too much about your lack of Spanish...if you can manage to get the basics right you'll be okay. October is a nice time to visit the city not too hot and not too cold. I would just say relax and enjoy the atmosphere of BA - a week is about right to see everything in a relaxed manner.
I would also recommend a couple of trips out of the city itself....a ferry over to Colonia (a World Heritage site) in Uruguay for the day and a trip to Tigre in the delta. Both are worth doing just to get way from the hustle and bustle for the day.
BA is a good destination to walk about in between taxi rides, so bring some comfy footwear. ^
Have a super holiday.

There are several lengthy but highly informative wine & food recommendation threads on the first few pages of this forum and I found the FAQ sticky threads very useful when I planned my trip last June.
I'd echo Hiddy's Colonia Del Sacramento recommendation as I did the trip, though stayed a night rather than doing it as a day trip and I appreciated the extra time to wander this historic gem of a town.
There is so much to experience but I'd add my vote for seeing the city from a different perspective with a bicycle tour. The one I took left from Plaza San Martin and took in Puerto Madero, Ecologic Reserve, 'Costanera Sur', La Boca, San Telmo and Plaza de Mayo Square and was around 3 or 4 hours with a stop to wander along a bustling Caminito in La Boca. In good weather with a pleasant guide it can be a great way to see larger parts of the city than on foot and I really enjoyed my tour, especially since I was the only one on it so got a private tour.
Enjoy your visit, though after making it you'll almost definately reconsider whether it indeed will be your first and only trip. Heck, I'm already planning my next visit and plan to extend to see more of Uruguay this time.

If your days in Argentina are only 19-25, I would definetly forget Colonia and Tigre, I would do an overnight to Iguazu Falls, leave early am. stay at SHeraton in the park for one night and return late afternoon. to BsAs. That is a spectacular place and not to be missed.

I agree with Hiddy and Gaucho100K. If you only have 6 days just enjoy BA...it is one of the world's great cities. By the end of 6 days you'll forget your 'probably only time in Argentina.' It's much more probable you'll be back and then you can do Colonia and Tigre and La Plata and an estancia and fly to Iguazu and fly to Mendoza. And 3 or 4 trips later you'll be down to El Calafate and Ushuaia.
And on all of those trip you can skip Cabana Las Lilas. Enjoy!^

I haven't been at Cabana Las Lilas (sp?) for several years now so I can't chime in on that to be fair. The point I want to make though, is that there are several tourist traps on the current restaurant lists in this forum (La Brigada is a clear one in my opinion) so I am quite surprised about this singling out of one place.....sounds more like a personal vendetta?

It will definitely will not be the only time in Argentina for you after going there. I did a similar 5 day trip April 2009. I did do the 1 1/2 day Iguazu falls sidetrip staying at Sheraton and it was very tight as people have commented. Would have loved to go to Brazilian side too but no time.
No comment on the Cabanas Las Lilas as I didn't try it.

No personal vendetta on my part about Cabana Las Lilas. I've been there a couple of times and it's a pleasant place with reasonable food. But its overpriced and you are surrounded exclusively by North Americans overpaying for their steaks. I can do that in Toronto.
Never tried La Brigada but I would highly recommend La Cabrera in Palermo. It's also aimed a bit at tourists but there will be lots of Argentines among the clientele, the steaks are fabulous and the value is excellent.

Well it looks like I might have to push my dates forward by two weeks. This would give the opportunity to add a couple of days on to our stay and perhaps allow time to make a side trip to the falls.

I might suggest you take a horseback riding for a day while in Bs. As. that is one of our high light on our trip.
I like to recommend you visit this place http://www.caballos-alapar.com or call Adrian up. (54-11) 4384-7013
Enjoy

Threads get old and outdated.... when I listed La Brigada, it was a more local place and yes, as of late, it has become more of a Cabania Las Lilas clone.... so yes, I would delist it today.
But please.... I have no personal vendetta against Cabania Las Lilas, nothing could be further from the truth.
