But you are right, in USA only Amex Blue has a chip but then again, it isn't exactly that kind of a chip. It is an RFID chip (if I am not mistaken) and not Chip&PIN kind of chip. So, we are also talking about different kind of technologies here.

Pretty much all UK and Europe cards (except for some old ones like Roger has!) have moved to the chip and pin system. Indeed, many merchants are very reluctant to accept with signature any more - you have to use your pin code.

Just looked in my wallet. My GBP denominated, UK-issued CENT card does have it, as do my US CENT and PLAT cards. My Aussie PLAT card does not have it.

Jesus, thats quite a few premium AMEX cards! There can't be many cardholders carrying multiple Centurions and Platinum cards issued in multiple countries.

Though I remember how cool it looked. Especially the "Charter Member" ones. I still think my UK CENT looks much cooler than my Titanium.

The chip now used in the UK cards WAS actually included in the US version of BLUE when it was first released. It didn't have a PIN function though.
That was back in 1999 or thereabouts, when BLUE was just out.
That was back when the card came with a reader device that plugged into your computer, and a bunch of other techno-stuff.
They ultimately switched it to the RFID chip that mine has now, instead.
Just a bit of useless trivia.

Amusing article from 2002...
http://www.fastcompany.com/magazine/56/wth.html
What the hell does that chip (and smart cards in general) do?
The answer: Mostly, nothing. So few stores have smart-card readers that Blue relies on its magnetic strip for routine charges. "Blue has a unique look and feel," says Judy Tenzer, an AmEx spokesperson. "It has technology that appeals to a new audience." But in reality, for the moment, it is style over substance.

I'm sure the renewed card next year will have Chip and extra digits..
