This is US accounts only right? Not UK?

This offer is for USA-issued American Express card accounts. Each country has its own version of Membership Rewards with different earning, partners, redemption ratios, and promotions.

crystak Jul 17, 2017 9:08 am

That a sweet deal. Is it still possible to convert a U.K. MR account to a US MR account? I recall this was the case several years ago and the points would also be converted depending on GBPUSD exchange rate, right ? Or would this essentially require a change of address?

No. What you may be recalling is this thread discussing opening an International Dollar Card, but that's not the same as a USA account. The arithmetic has changed, and the title is no longer accurate:

Valveking Jul 17, 2017 9:14 am

This seems like a good deal, but AA award space is totally non existent and BA transatlantic space is riddled with surcharges. Does anyone have some good ideas on how to use these miles?

Useful for flights between London and other cities in Europe. See also BAEC forum:

Ah yes that's right. But even with the GBPUSD being ~1.30, with this 40% you would still get 1.8 Avios per MR, wouldn't you?... if Amex still allows you to do that.

Best way to use them is for upgrades Word Traveller Plus to Business on BA, on transatlantic or any long haul route.

Alternatively, as mia said, BA offers Reward Flight Savers from London to all European destinations zone 1-4 and some of these can be a complete steal, especially for last minute bookings!

Big4Flyer Jul 17, 2017 10:17 am

They work great for flights on AS, especially here in the US. They seem to have much more award availability than AA.

No, you need to review the thread. International Dollar Card has it's own version of Membership Rewards. The transfer ratio is not 1:1 and this promotion does not apply.

Conversion: 3 Membership RewardsŪ Points = 2 Avios

nmenaker Jul 17, 2017 10:51 am

Transferring AMEX points to BA is really the only way to get access to American Airlines award inventory.

I recentlly booked a couple AA biz awards from south South America back to the USA for 75k avios each. (57.5k AA miles). With this bonus it makes the premium to use avios awards miles basically zero.

Is there a way to get a confirmed upgrade at booking time? Specific fares? Check availability within the 24 hour cancellation window?

The upgrade would be good use for me, and I don't mind buying a WT+ seat if I know I will be in CW come flight day.

MaxVO Jul 18, 2017 12:46 am

Perhaps there is already a discussion on FT about the BA/IB upgrade awards. If anyone can suggest relevant link(s), I'd appreciate it.

Of course, in fact all miles upgrades with BA are confirmed as soon as you do the upgrade, which can be at booking.

There's more info on this in the BA forum. This thread is pretty good https://www.flyertalk.com/forum/brit...7-edition.html

If you travel to Asia they are great for CX intra-Asia flights in J. 9k Avios HKG-TPE, 15k HKG-BKK, etc.

Sorry, any use which requires flying BA is not the "best" use ;)

Unless this has changed recently, BA upgrades come from the same inventory as awards seats.

:td:
If you upgrade a cash booking using Avios you get TP/Avios of the upgraded cabin.

Robl Jul 25, 2017 3:32 pm

Harder and harder to find AA availability on BA and TATL BA is worthless because of fees. However, with the bonus I find for some hotel bookings I can get 1.2 cents per MR.

slm9555 Jul 26, 2017 11:46 am

Is there any decent use of Avios to get from the US west coast to the Maldives? I am looking into booking my honeymoon trip and seeing if I can take advantage of the Avios transfer bonus in some fashion.

No, that would be one of the most wasteful uses of avios. It would be so even if you had a BA free companion certificate, because the BA high cost is no longer offset by good service/comfort in J/F cabins.

Ideally I would use Avios for non-BA metal and was hoping maybe I could luck out and take advantage of this promotion.

sam007 Jul 26, 2017 7:01 pm

guys - I want to transfer from my Amex everyday card MR to my spouse's Avios account. She's not an authorized user currently - do you think it'll work and how many days for transfer to take?

Thx

You need to add her as a supplementary cardholder on your American Express account. Transfers to BA are instantaneous.

ok can i request it now and immediately transfer points or have to wait for card to arrive

If a decent redemption rate is still an objective, perhaps US West Coast to South America 2 might be of interest for a future trip.

forkknifespoon Jul 31, 2017 9:09 am

With a bonus as large as this, would it be a bad move to just transfer MR to ANA then book something like Etihad to South Africa for 104K miles RT in J?

Avios are so confusing to me and flying on BA metal is too expensive...

This looks like a good idea. Are there surcharges with ANA awards?
Also, how easy are they to book?

Yes there are surcharges but they've been reduced substantially. The website is finicky. The biggest issue with NH awards is no one-ways.

If/when the website works, and provides quotes for the surcharges, that should give us enough specifics to compare the ANA route to avios. It appears they're both not trivial to figure out, but might have different sweet spots.

theplayer Aug 5, 2017 8:50 am

love the Boston to Dublin round trip for 25K avios on Aer Lingus...Use Dublin as your gateway to other European destinations.
Edit-looks like they devalued, off peak 26K miles now, but old price didn't have a peak and off peak.

Cathay Pacific.

Maldives is beautiful but not sure about now.
Would suggest going to Bora Bora (via Air France) instead and it's not to far from West Coast.

You cannot, but you can transfer Membership Rewards to FlyingBlue.

I would go on this trip sometime between December 17 and February 18. In regards to not beautiful right now are you referring to the weather or something else?

Do you suggest Bora Bora over Maldives in general or just for certain dates?

I know I'm going to get flak regarding this but here is my take.

I did consider the Maldives for a family vaca last yr. I went there during my honeymoon (over 10 yrs ago) and had a great time. I wanted to share the experience with my kids.

After doing some research, I changed my mind. Maldives is a Muslim country and some citizens have gone to join ISIS. I'm not saying a Maldivian is more likely to be a terrorist. However I will say tourist in the Maldives is a very soft target. All the resorts are on their own islands with a ton of Westerners. If there were a terrorist attack, there will not be a quick response time.

Bora Bora is just as beautiful. Although I will give that the Maldives may be a bit more romantic b/c it is more secluded. That's my 2 cents.

TravelStar Aug 9, 2017 11:18 am

In my experience, Round-trip from LAX to PPT Tahiti using Flying Blue points are very hard to come by. Especially in Premium Economy or Business.
Although they charge a lot of points, Etihad has tons of availability from the west coast to Maldives (one stop in Abu Dhabi) and is a Membership Rewards partner.
Also, you could get to Maldives using Avios from LAX to Doha (and on to MLE) on Qatar.
For both Etihad and Qatar, you might find better award availability if you search awards in two segments.

While nobody can predict weather for a one or two week holiday...in general during the months of December, January and February.....statistically you're more inclined to get dry/sunny weather in the Maldives, and wet/overcast weather in Bora Bora.

Are you sure the Aer Lingus BOS-DUB o/w @12.5k Avios is still available?
I think the raised it to 20k Avios o/w.

Also, it seems the Air Berlin routes are gone from BA and Avios redemption...
The JFK-DUS route was a bargain at 20k o/w and no fuel surcharges.
