The United gift registry has been discontinued.

Reminder: you must enroll and select UA as your airline BEFORE making a reimbursable purchase. Unless you check your bags or experience change fees, United has the fewest options for reimbursement because of the codes they use for transactions.

United does not sell giftcards. As of December 2016 American Express no longer reimburses MPX transactions.

Airline Taxes on Award Tickets
Doesn't seem to work anymore; see post 179 http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/25297196-post179.html and #391
Economy Plus and First Class Upgrade Fees
As of December 2016 there were conflicting posts; one stating that an upgrade to E+ coded as an "upgrade fee" and was, therefore, not reimbursed. Others said they were reimbursed as it was coded as "preferred seat upgrade." In February 2019, three separate FTer reported receiving varying amounts of reimbursement (dependent upon which card was used for the purchase) after purchasing an E+ annual subscription. The E+ subscriptions code as "preferred seat upgrade". Upgrading from E to FC will also not be reimbursed because it codes as a passenger ticket even when done after buying the original ticket. There seems to be a distinction between seat upgrades being reimbursed, while ticket upgrades are not.
Award Accelerator
I would not risk this. The last report of being reimbursed for Award Accelerator was for $68 on October 27, 2011. Every post about Award Accelerator since has reported "No reimbursement."
Eligible incidental fees include:
  • Checked baggage fees (including overweight/oversize)
  • Itinerary change fees
  • Phone reservation fees
  • Pet flight fees
  • Seat assignment fees (E+)
  • In-flight amenity fees (beverages, food, pillows/blankets, headphones)
  • In-flight entertainment fees (excluding wireless internet because it's not charged by the airline)
  • Airport lounge day passes & annual memberships
  • Onboard WIFI

This is certainly less appealing than Amazon gift card via the MPX app. Too bad that no longer works, I had even told myself I would cancel the Platinum card if they ever happened to remove that. I only used the Centurion Lounge 3 times last year so not sure I'm maximizing the benefits, although one of those times I was able to bring in 2 family member guests.

The new 5x rewards on any airline tickets bought directly is certainly nice.

Question: do the United travel bank funds ever expire? I rarely fly United.

I daresay that you clicked, but then did not scroll because the answer is in the very next post which quotes the expiration circumstances from United's terms.

You may do better here:

Put in 1x $200 for gift registry from amex plat today, will update when reimbursement posts. Will go for 1x $100 PRG tomorrow.

1/10 - $200 into registry
1/12 - $200 reimbursed

One thing I noticed is that if you go into 'Benefits' in your amex page, the round bar graph that says you have $200 credit will show as completed even before you receive the statement credit. This is a good indicator that it worked and you should be expecting the credit soon.

Put in for another $100 on the UA registry. Credited back by AMEX the next day.

I've also sent myself a link via the announcement, but that link just goes back to the name search box. Lastly, gift registry is turned ON.
Followup/resolution (by my own):

Submitted UA web ticket to look into issue; day later I received acknowledgement from them that they "...will forward your comments to our Web Product Team for review and resolution." After not having heard back for 6 days, I got it to work doing this:

Log IN MP
Set Target amount to $200
Set so friends/family can see target
Turn OFF gift registry searchability
Turn OFF gift registry searchability (did it again for good measure )
Turn ON gift registry
Log OFF MP
Go through the process of searching for name (nb. while not logged in)

Fix was probably to cycle the searchability, or set a funds target, or both. Try it if you are experiencing the same problem.

Anybody has the problem that funds are not posted to their UA travelbank? I did two $100 and got credited by Amex, but now the contributed funds haven't appear after 4 days. I also got no "united.com Gift Registry Contribution Notification" email!

E+ essentials is automatic for AMEX fee credit, which is convenient because it is refundable from UA when the underlying fare is refundable

When I log on at UA.com, my gift registry goal from last year is still there.

When I click on it, these are the only options:

Send Gift Registry Announcements
Send e-mails to family and friends to let them know about your gift registry.

View Sent Announcements
See a list of announcements sent and the responses received.

Make Flight Reservations with My TravelBank Funds
Begin the flight search process and then complete your purchase using the funds in your TravelBank.

Gift Registry Terms and Conditions
Read the complete rules of the united.com Gift Registry program.

Turn Gift Registry On/Off (Gift Registry Currently On)
Make your gift registry accessible or inaccessible to family and friends.

No way to fund the registry.

I think you're supposed to send an announcement to your own email and then click the link and fund from there. (I would log off from united and clear cookies after you send the announcement so that United doesn't know it's you when you return. Others can confirm if this is necessary).

yeah, it is a mess. They credited it incorrectly! Had to contact 1K voice TWICE to get it fixed. They just added it to my account this morning.
Amex credited the $200 as usual within a day or two.

No issues with gift registry here, I have $400 in there from end of 2016 and beginning of 2017. Both my Plat and PRG credits have posted this week, +200 and +100 respectively.

Made a gift registry purchase on my plat. It has yet to be reimbursed and the benefit's section still shows $200 as available. Will give it a few days.

Mine just took one business day after the charge posted to be credited back.
