Well into 7 figure spend on personal platinum and business gold (~$100,000 personal platinum, rest on business card). $250 statement credit offered (and accepted) on business account. Nothing offered for personal platinum.

Last year was $400 statement credit. Year before was 50,000 points.

had original Pt since 2012, last july switched over to Pt MB. barely any spend on it this year, decent amount in previous years between the regular Pt and MB cards.

Got offered either $200 statement or 25K miles today, took the miles. most of spend goes on everyday card or chase for bonus points, keeping this one only for extra warranty, delta reimbursement and possible cruise upgrade, will evaluate again in 6 months.

Amex Multiple Account Fee Waiver

I currently have the platinum delta charge card. Does Amex ever entertain the idea of a fee waiver or reduction if you add for example the regular platinum charge card?

A fee reduction, but not a waiver, used to be a standard feature of some Delta credit cards if you also held a charge card, but that evaporated years ago. These days you will need to negotiate a retention bonus (miles, points, money) by calling to close one of your card accounts. I have moved your question into the established thread to allow you to see the types of offers others have received.

Do people usually have a decent success rate on a reduction?

Business Platinum

$40k annual spend on the card

Carter29072 Aug 5, 2014 1:55 pm

I have had my Amex Business Platinum card since 2005. In the last year, I haven't put much on it since I have so many other great cards. My husband has one as well. He hasn't put much on his either. he called in June and they gave him a $150 credit. I just called because my fee posted this week. I was offered nothing. I waited a little while and called back. The representative said that her "system" generates for each account and there was nothing that she could offer. Since I have 60 days, I guess I will keep trying. I have two companion certificates in my delta account that are not used but don't have any plans to go anywhere with them. $195 is too much for this card.

30 minutes going back and forth, just like buying a car !

Couldn't post in wiki, so here goes

Platinum Business Member since 2007 and AF due next month.

150k yearly spend and never asked for anything before.

This process was like buying a car!

Advised that I was thinking about closing account due to loss of AA/US lounge access. Front line rep discussed downgrading card and spent 10 minutes on Platinum benefits, I said, no I'll just close it unless there was some kind of retention offer was available.

Transferred to a retention specialist and was re-read all of the benefits the card still has.

Still held firm on possible closure- now was the "Let's play deal or no deal" part of the call.

1st offer- $100 AA/US incidental credit, politely declined

5 minutes later, offer #2- $100 AA/US credit, 25k membership rewards, threw out a little hope, but told her that friends of mine were offered $500 credit in March when lounge access went away.

Then...."I've never done this before, but......" Offer #3/$100 credit + 50k MR

Done and thanks for playing! http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/images/smilies/smile.gif

Business Gold Rewards Retentions - Inconsistent Per Agent

I called in to ask about any retention offers for my AMEX BGR and first agent I talked to did not budge. Instead, she even tried to reconfirm details about my business. I don't know what the purpose for that was. Then she also pointed out that she can't waive the annual fee. I told her she could give me a statement credit then she insisted that if she did then it would be the same thing as an offset to the annual fee and that's not allowed. She asked me what the statement credit was for... which I took as fishing at first so I suggested a couple of things. But still no dice. Luckily, my cellphone dropped (not on purpose but just the right timing) so I called again and got another agent that looked at my account, saw how much I was spending, and did not seem to have any qualms about giving me a $100 'Loyalty Credit' to 'offset the annual fee'! Wait a minute, the other agent said that was specifically not allowed. Which one is it? Oh well, I don't care. I am happy with the $100 credit.

So my lesson learned today is 'hang up and call again'. Worked for me today.

AMEX Platinum retention bonus success

I called AMEX as my Platinum card was up for renewal one year after my taking advantage of the AMEX 100k miles bonus & one year annual fee waiver offer I received in the mail. My Platinum card spend over the past year was a little over $30k.

I told the customer rep I wanted to cancel my card since the benefits were greatly reduced from when I first got the card lat year. He quickly put me on the line with a card retention representative.

The retention rep went through the Platinum benefits to make sure I knew what they were and if I had taken advantage of them e.g. TSA Global entry fee waiver, Priority Pass etc. I told her yes I had taken advantage of them but my main issue was that the lack of domestic airline lounge access which was why I called about cancelling my Platinum card. She quickly folded and started to offer me retention bonuses.

After a grand total of 5 minutes of speaking with the retention rep, here is what I was offered to keep my Platinum card:
1) 50,000 miles OR $450 statement credit (= to $450 annual Platinum card fee)
AND
2) an additional $100 of airline fee reimbursements (use by 12/2014) on an airline other than the one I had already selected for my annual $200 incidental fee waiver. A new total of $300 in annual airline incidental fee reimbursements.

I took the $450 statement credit with the $100 additional airline fee reimbursement.

Thanks to everyone for posting what retention offers you are receiving as it helped me negotiate the AMEX Platinum retention bonus I received.

BTW, the retention rep specifically told me to be on the lookout for new AMEX Platinum benefits that would be coming out in Oct/Nov.

It's probably just another lounge in another airport I never use. Sometimes I think AMEX should just offer us free dunce caps as a Platinum benefit! :p

I have had an AMEX card for nearly 8 years. I started with a Gold Card and have had a Platinum Card for the last 3 years.

I called to cancel a few months back and they offered me nothing and began processing the cancellation after trying to talk me into staying (talking up the existing benefits but offering me nothing). I came up with an excuse to put off the cancellation (I asked them to set it for a future date and they said they couldn't do that, so I told them I would call back later). I called again two weeks ago and again was offered nothing to stay with them. I spend about $35,000 annually on my card and was pretty surprised by the lack of effort to retain me. Perhaps they were tired of trying to keep me, as they have given me retention bonuses each of the past two years -25,000 points two years ago and a $200 credit to my annual fee last year. They had upped my airline reimbursement to $300 this year when I called previously to complain about the loss of AA lounges.

But, in two efforts at canceling, I was offered 0 in the way of retention bonus....

FWIW, if you travel much internationally, the Club Carlson Premier card is a great option. In the last year, I have gotten 6 free nights at $300+ hotels (Radisson Blu, Park Plaza, etc.) off the points and benefits they offer (if you stay one or more nights with points, you get an extra night free). It's not so great for US hotels, but the foreign hotels in Europe, Asia, and Australia are quite nice (for example, I stayed three nights free at the Radisson Blu Sydney)(plus, they automatically upgrade your room on check-in if they have a better room available).

Plus, the Club Carlson gold status that comes with the card earned me Kimpton Inner Circle status through their reciprocity program... a nice little bonus...

So I received a phone call last week from someone at Amex I can only assume was from retention. The only reason I didn't get to the bottom of it was because I was on vacation out of country, and for $2 a minute, there are plenty of other people I'd rather be talking to. I digress - he started off by telling me how I'm a "high value customer" and he wanted to explain the benefits of my Biz Gold card, which I had mentioned previously I had wanted to cancel. I don't put many charges on it versus my personal Plat, so I don't know how I would be considered "high value" unless they're counting personal spend. I received an email offer to upgrade it to Biz Plat a couple months ago, but the incentive wasn't enough - aka it would take 100k MR for me to even think about it. So should I try calling back and shake the cancel stick at them since apparently I'm flagged as some sort of high value client? What's my strategy here? Just ask for what I want?

Just tried to cancel my PRG card and was offered 25k MR point to keep it. No strings. I had the card for 1 year and only put $5k on it in that time.

Wow. Do you have other AMEX cards? Do you put good spend on OTHER banks cards? (AMEX might see it via soft pulls that AMEX seems doing all the time).
